8-bore shooting videos
      #384599 - 30/04/24 07:53 PM

My neighbor took some neat videos of me fiddling around with my 8-bore. The load was 285gr of Schuetzen FFg black powder under a 1200gr bullet. Sadly, accuracy was very poor... but I got some nice videos out of it, so still a win. Based on various other tests I'm convinced the powder load needs to be decreased and will try a lighter charge at a later date (going to focus on ball loads for a bit).

The keen eyed of you will notice I didn't do well with both these shots. I fired two more afterword to confirm poor accuracy of the load and not just the shooter.

Interesting the way you are holding the rifle on the rest.
I've always thought that when shooting off the rest the gun is gripped by the slinter and barrels with the back of the hand resting on sand bags.
This will change the recoil 'profile' from the way you were holding the rifle and likely the accuracy of the loads as well.

Video of me shooting my 8 Bore GE Lewis is on the forums somewhere, can’t find it at the moment.
10 Drams of Swiss 1 1/2 and a .875 round ball. 1 card wad over powder then SPG soaked fibre filler wads under the ball to bring it up to proper height in the case neck.
Very acceptable 2 1/2” right/left accuracy at 25 yards with that obligatory cloud of smoke.

My shots were offhand, but like Daryl I’d suggest padding the sticks then resting your left hand on the pad rather than the bare fore end on the sticks.
………..However, your milage may vary.

BTW: you handle the recoil quite nicely. No drama. No barrels pointing up to the sky like some.

Thanks for posting. Like Mike, I thought you handled your rifle in recoil very well.

It looks like your and Mike's loads are close, 285 gr vrs 275 gr.

From my limited experience, Mike and Daryl are correct in that holding the double rifle affects results. My best results are to lift my rifle off off its support immediately before firing.

I'm used to shooting from African sticks which are made of wood. You would not want to rest your hand on those. I typically hold behind the sticks, not sure why I chose to hold in front in the first video but it felt stable enough.
