Army & Navy 470 Nitro (Webley 1902 action). Another plain rifle, and previously owned by Wal Winfer. According to Wal's notes, the rifle was built in 1908, and sold in Calcutta on 09/05/1921. It was the only single shot rifle retailed by A&N in the 470 NE chambering.

Built like a tank! Might be a plain working gun, but she'd be dependable in a tight pinch regardless. Will have to so us the range report when you get the chance CM76

Yes it sure is a sturdy old rifle. I will be taking it out for a shot towards the end of the year, so will give an updated report when I can.

Recoil is stout but not too bad, with the rifle weighing in at 10.5 lbs.

Great rifle! I absolutely love my 500. I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy your 470 as well although I wonder if the 470 somehow generates more recoil. One 470 double I once shot just seemed to have more recoil than my 500 and it was a heavier original British rifle.
Anyway, very nice to see another out of the woodwork so to speak.

Very nice plain working rifle. Problem is only one barrel!
One in .577 LNE or any chambering would be nice.

My .577 3" 1902 Webley is mentioned elsewhere here on NE. It was rebarreled some years before I got it, likely in the 1970's. No prior history available and sadly whomever had the rebarrel done lost or tossed the original barrel. My guess is that it was .450 or .500
The thing weighs ~11.5lbs, 28" barrel, and is quite a handful enough just with the Reloader 15 equivalent of the old 90 Cordite 650 grain bullet loading at 1950'/sec
Chris, I think a .470NE as you have acquired would be the sweet spot for a rifle like this.

I agree, having fired a number of both 470 and 500's and I find the 500 more pleasant to shoot than the 470 when they are both at their prospective weights that they should be.

Thanks Gents. I am yet to have any experience with a 500NE, so I cannot make comment, but the 470 is quite reasonable on this platform.
