I had a better than expected hunt for Sambar and Sika. I must be luckest person in the world. I was hunting in the Rangatiki (s) River area. Boy was it rough, lots of bush and straight up and down in places. I killed a beautiful Sambar. The first morning out my friend and I spotted a Small Stag with a hind. We estimated he had about 20 inch antlers. We waited and kept glassing the far ridge when we saw two Sambar stags fighting. He said this is the only the second time he has ever seen Sambar fight. We then proceed on a short stalk,to get in better positon to shoot, the wind was in our favor. We got as close as we could. He said it was only about 200 yards, I figured it was a lot futher. I was using my 35 whelen with Trophy bonded bullets. Since, I could not get any closer, I got a good steady rest. I put the crosshair's, hair on atabout the 1/3 the way down the shoulder. I let go and it seemed like for every for the sound of the bullet hitting. The stag jumped when no more then six feet he down and proceeded to roll down the steep hill. I was so elated the first day out and I got a Sambar free range. My friend said you are the luckest man alive. Most people go years before taking there first sambar much less than the first day of the first hour of hunting. The next day we were back scouting for sika deer nothing to be found but my friend had his bushnell range finder. He decided to see how far the shot from the previous day was. It was 325 yards, I would never of taken that shot if I had known. I just do not like taking long shots. Well for the next two days we were hunting in a new location when we saw several sika deer. There was a couple of stags with these hinds. One stag was was huge compared to the other other one and they both looked like mature animals. Well I got into postion to make my shot, I was shooting down hill so I aimed under the stag. I missed, shooting I am guessing maybe an inch under. Well all hell broke loose. The stag took off like a bat out of hell heading over this ridge a couple hundred yards away. I went at dead run to get to the other side from where I was so I could get another shot. I made it in time, the stag stopped, when he did the smaller stag stuck him in the side. The larger stag turned to do battle with the smaller stag. This gave me a chance to catch my breath and I made the shot and took him right through the heart. I tried to find a fallow deer but to no avail. But, what more could I asked for. I got the Sambar I wanted and got the frosting on the cake with the Sika.
I will post the pictures when I get them developed.
The Sambar was 26 inches and the Sika was 29 1/2 inches. I do not know how good they are but I am sure proud of them.
The friend that I went hunting with guides and outfits for Sambar. Because we are friends all I had to pay for is our meals, fuel for the vehicle and a place to stay.

I must say that was a terrible effort! Only a good sambar and a nice sika and no fallow!
Well done, a double on bush deer on the same trip.
You know some fellows in Australia hunt for decades and never chance onto such a good sambar stag. Except for Gryphon, he has a black book where he records where they all are .
The shot at the sambar sounds like an incredible shot with a .35 Whelan.
Who is your outfitter friend? Email me his name or give him a plug on the forums if you wish.
Again well done and looking forward to the photos.

If anybody is interested in Hunting Sambar free range, get hold of me and I will give you his email address. His rates are $2500 trophy fee plus daily rate. He was charging a 350 dollar daily rate and that is because where you staying was charging him that much a day. He is looking for a new place for huntersto stay at a cheaper rate. He can also arrange for you to hunt Sika and Fallow at a Safari Park (that's what they are called in New Zealand). He only takes 6 Sambar a year off the properties he aquired. I can assure it is free range not some fenced in area. I talked to several people while I was there and they said he is the top Sambar guide in New Zealand. While I was there several hunters came by and were trying to find out where he was hunting.
So if is anybody is interested do not hesitate to get hold of me by email.

I will be picking up the photo's tomorrow. I had the photo's put on a disk so with luck you see them tomorrow.

I just want to let you know the person, I went with is now setting up his own Hunts for free ranging Sambar. Plus Red Deer, Sika, and Fallow. The hunting will be on the North Island of New Zealand. His name is Craig Ferguson. His email address is craig.ferguson@telstra.net.nz If you are interested drop him a line. His prices are the best I have seen and you will have a good hunt. He is right now looking for new places for the hunters to stay. The area will be between Palmerston North and Taupo for the most part. In and near the Rangitiki River (sp)

PS I am having trouble posting the pictures. Will post as soon as I figure what I am doing wrong.

Do you have the photos on a web site already?
Find out the address of the jpg or gif file on the web. Then use that and copy it and paste it under selecting the Image code below [image ]http://yourphotodomain.com/directory/image.jpg[/image ] (remove the spaces after the image word above to make it work)
Its also good to keep the picture at less than 100kb and ideally around 40 to 70 kb. Smaller for small pictures and thumbnails. That way they load faster.
If you have large photo files, which is good for printing, but unnecessary for the web, you can use software programmes such as XAT ( www.XAT.com/?r98 ), Corel and Adobe Photoshop etc to reduce the size and also compress the photos.
Let me know if you need any help
Looking forward to seeing the photos.

Thank you for posting the pictures for me.
I want everyone to know Craig Fegugson just called me and hunter from Canada just took a 27 inch Sambar. According to Craig he missed several stags before he got this one. It took seven days of hunting to final get him close enough so he couldn't miss. I won't mention the hunters name, but the hunter shot Sambar in the guts twice from 50 yards before he could make a killing shot. I wonder sometimes about who should be hunting out there in this world. Maybe it would be better stated, a hunter needs to practice shooting and know his rifle before going hunting.
