Holy Grail stuff...

They do not come much nicer than this, Holland/Woodward 500-450 proofed for the tropical loading of 70 grs of cordite and a 480 gr bullet. Should be a joy to shoot with a 350 gr Hornaday RN. Cased and all original, built for George DuPont Pratt who was one of the heirs to the Standard oil fortune.

It doesn't look like it has ever been used. What is the year of production?

Wow, that is beautiful. That ain't no truck gun!

I don't care for guns that don't hunt. But with a gun like that, I could change my mind.

Well done.

No way!

He better get that thing to Africa, knock a few Biggees down with it, and show off its scratches and scuffs when he gets back home!!

Bouldersmith, spectacular. Problem is only one barrel. Get rid of it.

Lovely rifle for your gunroom and field use.

I think John you'll have to wait in line for this one, I don't think Steve will be letting this one go in a hurry!

A spectacular piece to say the least, not over done in an way!
As to the problem of only one barrel, shame it didn't come with a twin second rifle, that would be even more impressive

Well, it did - sort of…

This one. I no longer own this rifle but it is quite remarkable that they both ended up in Colorado at the same time through two completely different circumstances!

Nearly Identical rifles and both built for "Pratt"

bouldersmith: Do you know when your cased rifle was built?

Was one of those rifles his "user" and the other which looks untouched his "spare"?

What do they weigh?

I have tried to find out as much as I can about both rifles with little luck. The other rifle had a broken stock so we know why it saw such little use. All research on GDP mentions he was an avid big game hunter, yet I can find no pictures of him afield or with a rifle. Many questions, few answers. The one question I can answer is weight, it weighs 8 & 1/2 lbs.

The mysteries add to the interesting history!!

8 1/2. Very handy. I bet it just floats in the hands. Just hang on to it when you touch it off!

Fantastic purchase in a great cartridge. The mysterious history certainly adds to the enjoyment. Really well done.

I now own Huvius’s rifle. Holland has information on my rifle, but doesn’t have a record on Bouldersmith’s rifle. Wal Winfer’s book shows my rifle was delivered to Pratt in 1906. Winfer shows George D. Pratt bought Bouldersmith’s rifle with no date listed. The serial numbers do not line up with a timeline for dates. Holland can’t find a cross reference from my gun to Bouldersmith’s. We don’t know how Winfer obtained the purchaser of Bouldersmith’s gun.

Other than the terribly cracked stock on my gun, neither gun looks used much.

Ken

Very interesting.

Can you tell what the cause of the stock damage was? Accident of some sort or cracking due to shooting? Is it repaired now?

We don’t know how the stock was broken. The gun is getting restocked and hopefully it will be done late summer. Here’s a picture of how the stock was held together.

Classic oldschool repair!! (The Indians used rawhide, here!)

That stock when removed would make a neat lampstand or frame it.

Surely it was broken when stepped on by a charging elephant!

Now you guys will have to bring them back together again after the stock repairs are done!
