Bismuth Shot in Australia
      #382955 - 29/02/24 02:33 AM

Where can I buy Bismuth shotshells, or shot in Australia?

Preferably SA?

For the duck season.

I*s lead shot banned for waterfowl over there, too?

If so, since when roughly? Recent or has it been this way for years?

Different states, different rules. Many states have banned duck hunting, or officially. NSW allows rice crop shooting by the thousand .. but no hunting ... Victoria and SA still have a season.

The NT has fuck and goose seasons, I'm not sure if lead is used or not. Maybe Marrakai can enlighten us.

Tasmania, Qld, WA, seasons? Would be non lead if so. They all would use the internet for their "scientific" data.

SA's season has been shortened by a month, only starting midcMarch. To June I think. 10 duck bag limit, which isn't a bad limit. Need to check how many ducks in total.

Non Lead shot restrictions have been here for a long time. Was based on zero science, just copied the USA
bans, probably from California.

The non Lead shot ban is only for waterfowl.

God forbid the gun and hunting banners ever bring in EU and UK type lead restrictions on game shooting in general. The idiot UK shooting organisation just rolled over and accepted THE EU bans in the UK, as if they didn't selling pheasants, grouse etc shot in the UK couldn't be sold at all in THE EU.

Not a problem here. It's illegal to shoot ducks for the market, resale. Eating for oneself only.

I like using Bismuth for my duck reserve duck hunting. Public reserves, rangers may check your shotshells. Need to be factory ammo. At $5 per shotshells! Lucky I don't shoot many.

$5.00 is pretty steep. WOW!
Here, when hunting ducks, you cannot be in possession of anything but non-toxic shot loads. No restrictions re: factory or handloads.

The problem with bismuth handloads is rangers will be confused when checking them. They usually use magnets for steel shot. Bismuth by labelling.

I remember stupidly using some of my bismuth no.4s for rabbits .... Never again !

Did the pellets break up on the hares?
Or - was it just expensive shooting where lead would have worked just fine?

Here, non-toxic is for waterfowl only.

At $5/pop, I woiuld not be shooting at rabbits. At that price, I would use steel in my Baretta A400 and leave my vintage guns home.

Stateside, bismuth shells are about $1.50 to $2.00/shell which still is expensive,

Yes, of course, the cost on mere bunnies.
I don't know what bismuth shells are are here.
I think steel is around $30.00 for 25 (2 3/4").

Here in NZ it is all steel shot for gamebird shooting over water > 3 metres wide for all gauges, now including 410. Been steel for a number of years now for 12G and only last couple of seasons/years for the sub-gauges with last year the first for the 410 shotshell as steel loads have become available.

Autumn catalogue just out now for our NZ wide Hunting and Fishing retail franchise stores with prices for NZ produced Falcon ammo below. Falcon ammo is manufactured with Fiocchi hulls and primers and French made Vectan powders which are extremely clean burning. Other brands of ammo are available from H&F but Falcon is a sought after brand.

All 2 3/4" shells - prices per packet based on bulk 10 packet slab price (250 shells). Usually if purchasing by the packet prices can be $3 - $4 per packet dearer.

Bismuth 34gm #4 1340fps NZ$80.00 (AU$72.00)

Lead 32gm #4 1325fps NZ$30.00 (AU$27.00)

Steel 32gm #4 1450fps NZ$32.00 (AU$29.00)

The NZ gamebird licence is a national one, allowing hunting in all the designated areas across the country but each area has it's own bag limits etc.

I never said non lead shot was required by law.

Only required for waterfowl.

Because of bullshit anti hunting anti gun laws with no substance. Steel shot because of some BS Californian study. Since spread with no basis to numerous places with zero additional study or evidence. Recently extended to the UK agreed to by spineless shooting organisations to all game bird shooting. Because exporting pheasant, grouse, etc shot with lead shot, to the anti gun anti hunting EU is illegal.

Only shooting waterfowl requires it by law, it is illegal to have lead shot shells in your possession on a duck reserve.

I don't see a need for aweful steel shot. A few boxes for reserve waterfowl shooting will do me.

Eagle, can bismuth shot be purchased in NZ? In cannisters?

I've found Bismuth shot shells for sale in Australia

A$120 per 25 #4 shot 32 gram

I've found #4 bismuth shot for sale. Per 5 lbs is A$269. Per 1 lb, A$54. Works out as A$3.80 per 32 GMs, or A$95 per 25. Shot cost only. 5 lbs makes 70 shot shells.

The guys at the local gunshop that had Bismuth shotshells for sale, said it cost them A$950 per slab, 250 shells. Must have been marked up to A$125.

Obviously one will use good useful effective leadshot whenever one can.

***

In USA
US$32 per 1 lb

Midway US$143 to US$160 per 5 lbs, US$28.60 to US$32 per lb
