Never shot a 405,but all the others to me are lesser recoil than a 12ga.single shot. The 308 is a sweet round and will soon be a favorite.try the 150gr. and if you want really lite recoil try the 130gr.bullets.There are no flys on any of those rounds.Good Luck and hope this helps.

In actual ft. lbs recoil, the 12 bore kicks more than any of the ones listed, and you can include 7mm amg and .300 mag in that list.
: To a person, the felt recoil is different, as the 12 bore, while having more ft. lbs. recoil, has slower recoil speed. This is due to the powder charge being burned as it is normally much less than the rifle rounds.
: As shotguns are rarely shot off the bench in deliberation, they are generally "thought" to kick less than rifles.

So, in terms of recoil, what is a 12gauge comparable to in a rifle cartridge? Anybody know that?

recoil calculator
Using the above recoil calculator a 12 gauge shotgun @ 7 pounds with a slug vs a .308 rifle 150 grain bullet in a 7 pound rifle: Both the recoil energy and recoil velosity are about the same.

I know a 12ga shotgun has 32 ft lb of recoil. That more than a 30/06. Right around the 300 win mag.

allright.. I shoot a 12 gauge with slugs with no problem. No problem shooting 30-06 with 180 grain bullets as well.

What caliber would you suggest I try? Or buy..

; I wasn't considering wimpy little trap loads (that kids can shoot) as a 12 bore load.
: My 12 bore loads for 2 3/4", 1.5oz. goose loads run 41 lb. recoil on the calculator. That is considerably higher than the .308's pidley 18lbs. by more than double and higher than any .300 mag. except one of the ridiculous .300(or larger) Utra mags.
: A .308 with handloads is about identical to a .30/06 with factory ammo - around 20lb. recoil- managable for most men. I am thinking of a 180gr. at 2,700fps. With a VVN powder, this is easily obtainable. It is suitable for most North American game with proper hits. A .303 runs 2,550fps with the same weight bullet, and is suitable for the same range of game, but is generally available in less accurate rifles, normally older military guns.
: The game animal, inside 200yds. would likely not know the difference, both shot through the lungs.

I own and hunt with both those ridiculous [ Thats your opion] Rem Ultra Mags. The 300 has 41.26 of recoil ft lbs
and the 338 has 49.63 max of recoil ft lbs and my 300 Win Mag has 32.40 of recoil ft lbs. I was talking about the high brass 12 ga shell not a goose load.

Well, there ya go- the 12 bore runs from light loads in the .308 recoil range up to in excess of the .458 mag in the 3" category and 2 oz loads.(over 55lb.) I merely picked a heavy 2 3/4" load. The 1oz slugs I just bought are rated at 1,700fps with about 28lb recoil, probably in the 150gr. .300 mag range.
: Atempting to rate recoil with no information other than a 12 bore load, with it's extreme recoil range, and with rifle rounds also having large recoil ranges depending on loads, especially with Hornady's 'light' 'women & kid's loads" is a very difficult task. What loads does one use? Pick the lightest laod out there, or a medium one which would be similar to your .330 mag?
: I call the Ultra Mags ridiculous due mostly to their outrageous powder charges and wayyyyy overbore capacities. When the .300 mags are already at or over max for the case, burning an extra 25gr. of powder just seems a bit foolish, but then, some people will do anything to get a few more fps. I guess that's why some people neck the old '06 down to .224, or .378's down to .30. The fps race just seems foolish - it is never-ending with companies trying to milk every last penny from customers.
: Yes - that's my opinon and I'm within my rights to give it - at least on an American web site.
