Black powder is hard to get here. Making it might be the only way to get it securely. If legal.

That looks just like my 1916 Mark 111.
One thing about shooting BP, is that it heats the barrel up faster than smokeless. It also kicks more than an EQUIVALENT load of smokeless. This is VERY "evident" in shotshells with a SxS where holding the tubes is normal.
Shooting jacketed bullets quite cleans the bore each shot. BP and jacketed, shoots usually VERY accurately, even compared to good cast bullet shooting.
The "plug" used in the original load, weighed 70gr. The only way to load that was to use a compressed pellet, put into the case before it was formed. A pellet was put into the straight walled case, then a jute wad was placed on top of that, then the neck was formed then the bullet loaded.

The Snider video was interesting as well. I'll have to send that one off to my bro. He has a couple, seems to me.

I agree, that was an interesting video.
I might try using round balls in my Snider DR.

I knew about the round balls as Taylor noted that most of the guys in the States are shooting them in their Sniders.
Lee makes .600" moulds. .587" is normal for groove dia. seems to me.

I was thinking that the Howdah pistols can be .577 Snider. This method of making a,munition would work for them as well.

I see problems in a double barrel gun with the roundball if you don't crimp it but this will affect brass lifetime. a roundball in a heavy double without a tight crimp come out of the case after the first shoot.

Yes - true, would need a roll crimp which is easily done with a drill press and the roll crimping tool.
Regulation then becomes the problem.

I note a gunsmithing company here in NZ makes and sells roll crimping tools for most common gauges and states they can make up for other gauges too. The stainless steel crimp tools work in a hand drill or drill press but they state that the tools crimp paper and plastic cases only, NOT brass cases.
Must be a different tool setup for roll crimping brass cases?

Yes, of course, paper or plastic only.
A normal tapered crimping tool is used for brass cases.
Buckstix makes them in every gauge AFAIK.
I have an old die in my Herters shotshell press that is meant for paper and it smooth cone inside. It crimps brass cases beautifully. A star crimping might, but would need to be metal, just like the ones Buckstix makes.

Yes I wondered about no crimp in those reloads.

Could not a plastic hull roll crimp be used? I have no idea how they done.

Perhaps a new thread on reloading for bore guns, and crimping? Pictures, videos showing how it's done, Or maybe already exists.

Any pictures, threads on Buckstix's crimping tools?

One good thing I've found out. It appears making black, powder here is NOT illegal. One enthusiast, investigated the legalities and making it non commercially is legal.

Test BP screened as home made FFFg in fineness was shot and was very effective. And seemed to be a very usable alternative to commercially purchased BP. Hard to find and source here these days. Tested in a revolver. Snappy good power.

The gentleman made his own charcoal, used saltpetre and sulphur, not sure of the formula, and a small rubber (?) sample tumbler to crush and mix the BP. Kitchen sieves to sort the BP into finished sizes. There might be more to it.

If I ever get a cannon, homemade BP would be essential.
