Baikal double rifles-how are they?
      #38176 - 26/09/05 01:15 PM

I see the Baikal doubles are not too expensive, mostly O/U's but a SxS model in the works. Not too many calibre choices but are they good rifles? Regulated well etc? The biggest calibre I found they had listed is the 9.3x74R I think. That seems like it would be a good cartridge for Canada. Any thoughts?

They are chap for what they are but you get what you pay for.
I have hard they shoot OK.

9.3 x 74R is a great cartridge.

As for Canada, killing wise it is fine but I'll leave it to those who have
shot there and know the game distances for a better answer.

I guess as long as they are sturdy and shoot well enough I would be happy with that. If it is mainly details in finishing etc. where they saved money, that would be more acceptable to me.

I have been getting by pretty well with the various cartridges built on the 30-06 case, the 30-30, and my .577 Snider rifles. But I need something that hits harder a bit longer range than those. These Baikals might be the answer, but I think I might end up being happier if I just get a Ruger #1.

I would consider the 9.3x74R cartridge to be adequate inside of 200 yards for anything in the western hemisphere. I wouldn't call it overdone for brown bear or polar bear, but I'd call it adequate.

I agree with most of what's said. The 9.3X74 would be my choice for a double rifle for hunting here. In power, it's about equal to 9.3X62 factory, maybe a few fps higher.
; A Chez hunter took an 8 footer(griz) last fall with a single shot using SAKO factory ammo from his .9.3X62 Manlicher. They were loaded with a Norma 286gr.
: The bullet went the full length of the bear which was shot facing on, in the cenre of the chest - at less than 30 yds. It collapsed at the shot.
: While not a really big bear, it would stand a good 9' on his hind legs.
: I don't know anything about the Baikals, but the BRNO (CZ) is an excellent rifle for an over/under. Their barrels are adjustable for whatever load you're using.

the more I think about it the more I am thinking of not getting one. I have fired some very nice doubles and don't like O/U terribly. I will wait and see if they start production on the SxS models. I have used Ruger #1's enough to know I like them a lot and would be happy with one. So I have made up my mind that my first big bore(non black powder) rifle will be a Ruger #1 Tropical. I think loading for the 375 will be easier than the 9.3 too, but that is only a minor detail to me.

But I will keep my eye on some of these lower end doubles and maybe in a few years.....
