Mr. Searcy has both a "night sight" as well as a standard front sight as options. The night sight sounds good but I'm not certain I want a flip up doodad in addition to a normal bead.

Which front sight did you order and is it big and easy to see?

Thank you,

Richard

I have the standard front sight. It is very easy to see even with old eyes.

I recently shot a dry land hippo just at dark. I might have been able to see the front sight better with a night sight but I couldn't have seen the rear sight very well anyway. Thanks to the custom fit of a Searcy the sights are pretty well lined up whether you can see them or not.

Mine is a gold bead but I think the ivory bead standard sight would be better.

Like you, I would not care for a flip up night sight because what I like about a double rifle is its simplicity of operation.

One of my Brit doubles has a moon sight. Believe me, there is absolutely no chance of that sight flipping-up accidentally! I assume Butch's sights are properly made, so why not get one? You will never know its there, until you NEED it!

Having said that, the ethics of shooting by moonlight in today's hunting-field may preclude the deliberate use of a moon sight, but it could save your life if you happened to bump into something when caught-out returning to the vehicle or camp after dark.

rgp - I agree with not wanting a flip-up dodad...

the coolest option i've found for visibility (and some may disagree but) is the trijicon inserts.

Trijicon has a custom shop and for about 100bucks they will put trijicon in whatever you want.

The trijicon is not necessary for low-light shooting, but the trijicon is enclosed in (and visually surrounded by) a white plastic (or space-age polymer) line.

On a DR, I would consider having an insert put into your existing front bead, and a vertical line in the rear sight.

neither increase the size of the sights (visually) as would a flip-up front sight, but they are much more visible with their white outlines.

Basically, you have butch build your gun and he can send the sights (after the rear is filed in) to trijicon, or you can remove the sights and send them yourself after you receive the gun.

My Searcy is fitted for the NECG caterpillar inserts such as this:

If your rifle is set up for that style of sight blade, then you can get a wide variety of heights to adjust your POI. Note that guns regulated in Death Valley can shoot to a different POI at your home location.

But if you get the flip up night sight, I think it only comes in one height. So I feel it is a disadvantage.

Also, you can get fiber optic beads for your Searcy, which is what I did.

On my double I have the flip up "night" sight and the thing just couldn't flip up on its own, or down on its own either. The regular standing bead is essentially the same as the catapillar sight 500grs posted. The flip up used to come in two heights and one bead size but according to NECG you can only get one height now as 500 noted.

FWIW they suggested filing the brass bead at a 45* angle, lower point toward action, higher toward muzzles, for increased visibility with any size bead. I tried it on my 375 and it worked. In the end I went with the "fiber optic" sight like 500 posted in the midle "bead" size for my 375 and it is really visible against any color target, more visible than the much larger night bead of the flip up on my double. I'm not sure of the robustness of the fiber optic sight so I replaced the solid hood the 375 came with with one from NECG which has oval holes on each side to let more light in. This really works too.

Back to the flip up sight, it is much more visible than just the brass bead, especially if the bead is not filed at 45* and polished. I think it would be useful in thick brush and toward dusk. It shoots to the sme poi at 25 and 50 as the brass bead so far as I can tell. It subtends (?) about six or eight inches at 50yds. I will report how it works on my safari which is coming up soon.

I have found Flip up moon sights to be useful on
guns for when the sky clouds over and gets really dark
and in the thicker scrub where it can also have little light.

With filing the sight, I used to use 45 degrees but cut
this back to 30 degrees - more brass is showing towards you.

Finally, you need to polish the brass or platinum every so often
as it tarnishes.

Hope this helps

500Nitro,

Thanks for the pointers. I haven't filed the bead on my double yet but will do so at 30* and will shoot on Sunday.

JPK

Thanks

One benefit of filing the sight at 30 degrees
is that if you don't like it you can always re file it to 40 or 45 degrees.

If you start at 45 degrees, you can't put it back to 30 degrees !!!

I still recommend having a flip up moon sight - I have found it useful
in really thick stuff (big thick canop above) while chasing buffalo.

You never know when you might need it.

I would suppose that is why they are called options!

As for me, IMO, and opinions are kind of like options,
all of my rifles are equiped with flip up moon sights. In fact, I wouldn't have a rifle without one.

I find them very helpful in acquiring a target late and early in the day, and especially in thick cover. The moon sight I prefer is the one made by Holland & Holland. It is of a different design than the one manufactured by NECG, although the also sell the Holland & Holland.

As others have posted, there are many occasions when the moon sight is a blessing and I have never seen one move by accident.

I apologize for the delay in responding.

Thank you to all of you because you've added a lot more options for consideration that I hadn't thought of myself.

Palmer, if I get an ordinary bead I think I would prefer a huge ivory one. My eyes are just fine (20/10 vision) but bigger and brighter is faster so I prefer big and bright.

Marrakai, Searcy uses sights from New England Custom Guns, which I think are sold in Australia under the name Recknagel.

new_guy, have you used any of Trijicon's custom sights yet and if so how good is their custom work? I've only tried them on a SIG .45 ACP years ago, they were quite good after dark.

500grains, I hadn't thought of fibre optics until you mentioned them. Unfortunately my only experience with fibre optic sights is in borad daylight so no idea what they are like after dark. It seems like a fibre optic in lime green would be superb though.

JPK and 500 Nitro, soon as I'm finished cleaning up a storm related mess here I will try a spare gold bead sight and file it at an angle and see how it works with my eyes. I have doubts as to my ability to use a file with sufficient precision though...

MauserRifle, all the options are rather confusing...it was easier when I only knew of one option...

Now you see why I stated options are very similiar to opinions, there are so many. Fortunately though, that is a good thing. Because of forumns like this one can draw on the vast knowledge and experience of the many members from around the world. In a rather short period of time one can acquire a great amount of knowledge from the vast experience of others that would have taken a life time or two to acquire on their own.

By listening to what everyone has to say and learning form their experiences I believe it becomes far easier to decide what will be most suitable for yourself. Go to a large gun shop or to one of the large trade shows and try to see as many of the various sights as possible on rifles. Then you can decide which sights are best suited for you.

Good luck in our venture.
