Small bore DR's... Less is More?
      #37971 - 22/09/05 05:13 PM

While most of the attention on this forum seems to be understandably related to big bore double rifles and DG hunting, I'm interested in hearing about the more unusual small to medium bore doubles that members may have encountered.

For instance, yesterday I heard of a DR in .22RF originally custom made in the 1930's by one of the British makers for a wealthy Sydney family... perhaps for a young son to learn on as it apparently matched a big bore DR by the same maker. No photos sadly...

It was apparently not uncommon for DR's to be made in various small bore calibres, and even today Heym offer a couple of the smaller European calibres to suit their unique hunting conditions... for Roe deer etc.

Anyone have any stories and hopefully images of these Lilliputian DR's in contrast to the usual .500+ calibres?

Cheers

TilleyMan

Holland Royals in 240 Apex are quite common.
Also a couple of Holland Royals around in 7mm / .275.

I have a Boxlock in 360 BPE (2 7/16ths, not the 2 1/4")
and BP Doubles in small calibres are quite often encountered.

303 is also a common chambering in Doubles.

There's a few in Darwin. Ol'mate Fred P_ around the corner from me has a lovely Westley Richards chambered for the 8x57 rimmed cartridge. It is profusely engraved, very opulent for a box-lock. It obviously has the .318 bore-size, as he found out its pretty hard to open after firing .323 ammo! Another mate Kurt M_ also has a Westley Richards, in .22 Savage Hi-power! Very nice. An 'aquaintance' has a high-grade Tolley in .32-40.

Kynoch loaded for all three of these chamberings.

Here's a couple of pics of the Tolley, not very clear I'm afraid but you get the idea.

I heard that Peter Van Meurs from Pro Cal is making one in 22rf. I love the idea, sounds like a fun project. I know there is a double rifle in 22 Hornet in Cairns ,but dont know much about it.
