I have acquired a Mauser 98 sporter and wonder if anyone can tell anything about the name marked on the underside of the barrel. The action has no maker marks anywhere in fact the only marking on the action above the stockline is the serial number and a German proofmark
Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Probably not related at all, but this Wiki fact is interesting nonetheless:
Quote:
Hermann Recknagel (18 July 1892 – 23 January 1945) was a German general during World War II and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords of Nazi Germany. Recknagel was shot and killed by Polish partisans on 23 January 1945 in German-occupied Poland.

There may be no relation, but it may be the company now known simply as Recknagel in Germany. They make a sites and accessories for rifles.

recknagel is one of the firms from suhl specialised in making parts for guns like sights and mounts since 1867 https://www.recknagel.de/en/company/

but I would not wonder if other members from this family were working as master gunmaker there. this was very common, everyone was related with everyone and all were in the gun business.

This rifle was proofed 1144 = November 1944 by the Zella – Mehlis proofhouse, “spruce in heart” mark. A Reinhold Recknagel is mentioned from 1925 to WW2 as a gunsmith at Damaschkeweg 1, Zella – Mehlis. He was just one of the baker’s dozen Recknagels working in the Suhl and Zella – Mehlis guntrade during the interwar years.

Thank you kuduae exactly what I wanted to know. Interesting that sporter rifles were still being made that late in the war years.

Yes I know Moritz Fehrer who now owns Recknagel
I was sure he was a member of the forums but he said he hasn't been. Maybe he was an early member of the NE FB page. I knew him before and we met up at the Heym International Challenge, where he attended as a Heym owner. At the time he lived in Scotland. A few years ago, three? he bought Recknagel. I was and am impressed.
I'd love him to join the forums.
