A good time to reiterate what Daryl just said.

I regard the bent wire as the most important tool on the reloading bench, period!

My personal rule is "every case, every time".

Even when bulk-reloading .308 for vertebrate culling operations, the rule stands.

Every case, every time!

..with apologies for sounding like a schoolmarm, and for heading off-topic a little.

LOL thanks gents. I did already know that trick but wanted to actually measure any physical thinning of the case material so cutting it open was the only realistic way.

Another quirk of published 6.5x53R case dimensions that may cause headspace problems: Wolfe’s Illustrated Reference of Cartridge Dimensions and the Ammo Enzyclopedia list the case with a rim thickness of just 1.25 mm = .049”. I measured some prewar military loads of Dutch, Portuguese and Austrian make. All have a rim thickness of 1.65 mm = .065”, same as a .303 Mk VII load. Btw, rim diameter of the 6.5x53R cases is 13.2 mm = .520” instead of the .303's 13.6 mm = .556” .

I don't own a lathe. Is there a way to reduce .303 rim diameter at home without one?

A good eye and a file would do it. We're only talking about removing 18 thou here anyway, on kuduae's figures.
Good occupational therapy in front of the telly!
The penalty for slightly out-of-round rims is nothing in real terms.

Chucking the case-neck in a drill press (or even a power-drill) on a mandrel (seated projectile?) could speed-up the process and reduce errors, but with the case body unsupported one would need to be gentle with file pressure.

Of course a lathe is better...

Just about finished with my 1893 project when I ran into a minor issue. The front trigger guard/ receiver screw broke at the interface between the threads and shaft while I was carding it after boiling. It looked like there was a flaw in the metal. I tried to see if a replacement screw was available from Numrich but it was an incorrect thread size. I have an excellent gunsmith near me who will be fabricating a replacement. As soon as this is complete, I will post pics of the finished project.
In the meantime, I will be loading some ammo for the old girl. I'm going to start out with loads that have been very accurate in my MS1903 using both 129 and 16o grain Hornady bullets. I'm very anxious to head to the range and punch some hole in paper with her.

My gunsmith called me yesterday to tell me that he had finished making the front receiver screw. I picked up the parts today and put the finishing touches on the old girl. I'm very happy with how this project came out. My end goal was to make her look like a well-maintained 130 year-old hunting rifle. The sunlight really shows off the beautiful grain of the stock.
I have 129 and 160 grain ammo loaded and I was able to source some en bloc clips. I'll report back after I take her to the range.

You seem to have achieved that goal quite nicely.

C&RSenal is wonderful!

It's hard to beat the 'deep dive' histories and analyses provided by Othias.

His entire WW1 series is very worthwhile and enriching to watch.

Thank you JDL. This weekend, I tried my hand at making brass from 303 Enfield. I had really good results running the brass through y 7x57 die and then in my 6.5x54 MS die. Trimmed them to length and tested them in the Steyr. They all chambered nicely.

I made an early trip to the range today. I took the 1893 Steyr along with my 1905MS, 1910MS and my Ross M1910. It was a great day at the range. All 4 rifles performed nicely. The little 1893 shot well with the load that I use in my 1903MS. My load consists of Hornady SP 129gr with 33.5gr of IMR4064. I shot this group at 50 yards. The front sight is very tiny and I expect groups to improve once I get the aperture sight repaired. Just for kicks, I decided to see if I could ring the gong at 200 yards. I flipped up the 200 yard sight and aimed at the lower end of the gong and managed to hit it 4 out of 4 times! Did I say that I love this little rifle? Sorry that I couldn't figure out how to rotate the image.

Great to hear you had a great day at the range Fjrdoc!
You must still have good eyes then, well done on your group & ringing the gong!
That load is a keeper

The 1910 shot well. I'm working up some 270 gr cast lead loads using gas checks. I purchased a MP mold and I'm dropping flat-nosed and hollow-points. Performance was very good at 50 yards.

Hello all. Opening day of rifle antlered deer season started on November 25 in Pennsylvania this year. I had decided earlier to take my 1893 George Gibbs Steyr project rifle out into the woods.
On Sunday afternoon, our group did a drive and I was one of 2 posted hunters. Shortly after the hunt began, I noticed a deer walking about 120 yards at me along a logging trail. I could see that the antlers had a nice spread but it was difficult to determine the number of points. The buck made a right face at 100 yards and started walking up the mountain. He paused for a moment and I decided to take a front shoulder shot. The deer dropped and rolled down the mountain. In the process, his right antler stuck in the dirt and broke off at the base. I approached the buck and as I neared him I could see that his head was upright and that it made a slight movement. A coup de grace shot in the neck finished him off. closer inspection showed that he was a 7 pointer of nice body size.
It was a perfect ending to this project! The 6.5x53R cartridge did its job nicely. A 100-yard shot with an aperture sight was icing on the cake.

Well done fjrdoc!
Shame about the antler breaking - then again you did did it in style & got the meat in the freezer!
Hard to beat that.

Thanks 93x64mm. I'm not upset about the antler. I'm going to have a European mount made. A little Gorilla glue or epoxy will fix it.

Congrats and well done!!
