Hi Roy,

I'm circling back on this project to say I've spent a couple of hours resizing RWS brass to fit my double's tight chambers, using scotch tape, as discussed above. Once I had that done, I neck sized using 357 Mag dies and then belled the mouth slightly to accept 200grn Hornady jacketed soft points (as you suggested.) If the weather holds off tomorrow morning, I'll sneak up to the range and try the 10 rounds I loaded using IMR 4895. Fingers crossed.

A 38-55 trim die was suggested as a possible way to compress the case body without messing with tape. I bought a LEE trim die for this reason, but couldn't measure any compression of the case dimensions when using it. So a lot of time practicing grade school craft skills with tape.

Will let you know how it goes.

That is wonderful, great news!!! Best success in shooting your rifle. Hopefully the weather is better where you are than here as we have snow and freezing rain predicted.

I hope the barrels regulate with your load. Please post how it works.

I have not used IMR 4895 so would be interested in how it shoots. I use IMR 4198 in kipplauf which is a 9.1x72 (I earlier called it a 9x72 but the barrel is martked 9.1. I shoot 0.359" lead bullets in it).

If you have a chron (or have access to one), please advise velocity. I believe factory 9.3x72 is rates at 2100 fps. I thought a 1900 to 2000 fps would be agood target but would be interested in what you and others get in similar cartridges.

On a separate subject, I made a model of the rear Triebel scope mounts for my O/U Sempert & Krieghoff and have asked Bill Schwarz to machine a blank mount into a working mount. If that works, he may be able to make scope mounts for you. I will let you know how that works. Bill was slammed with projects when I asked him to help so it may be awhile.

Chris, just another comment. I think the caliber of mid-bore double rifles like your double rifle are great. The 9.3X72 and its brothers (9x70, 9.1x72 etc) are great for deer and hogs hunting. They are easy to handle and lively.

You have put in a lot of effort to make ammunition and glad to see your hard work paying off.

Roy,

The 4895 loads were not impressive. Velocity was below 2,000fps and varied significantly between the right and left barrels. I've done a deep cleaning with what I had at home, but am still was getting dirty patches after a lot of elbow grease and Hoppes No9, so I've ordered a non-ammonia copper remover and will try that.

I'll probably shoot the new loads before I cast both bores to see if the right barrel, which had lower velocity on each pair, is more worn than the left, or if the velocity was due to greater fouling.

My next loads will use 4198 and the 200gr Hornady JSPs. Based on loaddata.com I will start at 32.5grns. Those are ready and waiting a free window of time to get to the range (and weather that doesn't suck.)

I couldn't agree more. I love my 450 and 500BPE doubles, but they are not as much fun to carry day after day, and the 360s are enough to do what I need to do! I haven't yet tried hunting with my 450/400, but that should be as nimble as the 360s (360 2.25" and 9.3x72r), since it's a black powder gun in the shorter 2 7/8" variation.

In older doubles a lower velocity from the right barrel is not uncommon. I have 4 doubles and have had more, ranging from 500 BPE, 11.15 X 60R, 8 X 65R Brenneke, 8 X 60R Magnum and a 56 cal. muzzleloader.

Thanks Sharps. I just recently got the Garmin chronograph and haven’t tested any of my other doubles, Besides a 500bpe by Dickson that is in virtually unused condition
