Double Rifle, NIB, for $375!
      #37423 - 14/09/05 09:50 AM

I think I have seen the lowest priced double rifle ever. Went to the gun show this last weekend and there saw two double rifles, one for $375, the other $369.95, NIB. That's right, less than four hunnert bucks.

They were made in Russia of course. (As an aside, I have learned that the brand names associated with Russian guns are not the names of the manufacturers, but the names of the exporters. Baikal for example, is an exporting firm, not a maker.) these were imported by EAA. they were over under rifles with a regulating adjustment under the bottom barrel. This adjustment looked as if it would only move the bottom barrel's impact point vertically, not horizontally. But it was hidden inside the forearm and did not add klunkyness to the looks. One rifle was for the 308, the other for the 223. Double triggers, auto safety, top lever. Like a Valmet, no ribs between the barrels. Not the best quality I've ever seen, but darn good for less than $400! The Russians have been steadily improving their wares. (There is a rather humorous story behind this improvement.) At the same show saw one of the New Remington distributed Russian shotguns and it was far and away the best looking I've seen yet from Russia.

Remember what they said about the bear. The wonder is not that he dances so well, but that he dances at all.

Those DR's (if you can call them that !) have been available here in Australia
for over a year for under $900 - $1000 which corresponds to the US$375.
308 and 30-06 were the calibres available.

They sold a few but most have stayed on the shelf and have been hard to move.

I know they have sold more Beretta's O/U's (Silver Sable/Gold Sable)
than anything else looking at how many I have seen purchased by mates.

With the exception of bottom feeders, price is not the only consideration
when buying something as I think most people have found out and has been.

unspellable,

Based on how alot of people on this forum are jumping up and down
about the "potentially" cheap Spartan's, then if the one's you saw
are that cheap (good value), then why aren't they walking
out of the door over there and over here ?

Do you know ow many were sold at the gun show ?

As per my previous post, a lot ended up here unsellable
on the shelves - no one wants them regardless of how cheap
they are.

The same will apply to the Spartan - they will sell an intial
few and then it will stop dead.

Gotta say, if the Spartan wasn't such a hideous styling excercise I'd be one of the guys setting deposits down at the local remington shop.
The gun is just ugly.
Doesn't need to be either.

I've thought of buying one to take apart and completely re-countour everything, replace what doesn't have enough metal to get ground, filed, and welded into a more pleasant shape, and hack the hell out of the wood to get it to resemble more of a gunstock than a canoe paddle.
Six hundred bucks still kind of sounds high for that much of a project lump to start with.

I bet we'll see someone doing that soon as they hit the gunshop racks...

I obtained Remington's brochure on the Spartan line. They have an over under that looks very much like the one I saw at the show. I would not be at all surprised to learn they are the same rifle under two different labels.

This is the first time I've seen one, so they are too new in the area to make any predictions on sales.

The Midwest is not precisely traditional double rifle country, I think most people only know enough about them to be dangerous. Like the guy I ran into in my home town in Michigan who wouldn't use a double rifle for deer hunting because "it isn't accurate enough". Like he's going to hunt deer with a bench rest rifle? There are a few hard core types like me around, more than you'd think if you beat the bushes a bit. But then that may be the case in a lot of areas.

I'd suppose a few of the hard core types like myself might buy one for a toy to play with. After all, I did once buy a CVA front stuffer double rifle.

As for the looks of the Spartan SxS rifle, I wonder if it will improve. Some of the people doing the buying in Russia have been beating the drum for better styling. I saw the Remington Spartan SxS shot gun and it looked an order of magnitude better than anything I've seen from Russia up to now.

I agree with you re the crap styling. It wouldn't take much to make them
look 10 times better.

I believe the Rem and Baikal O/U are the same thing under 2 different names
not that I really give a toss.

Sometimes having a cheap "toy" is not a bad idea.

On a lark I bought a Mdl 94 Baikal in 12/7X57R. The metal to metal fit is very good. The stock is hideous. The damn things shoots one ragged hole, and the shotgun barrel shoots where pointed. I paid a whopping $249.00 for it...

I never shoot it in another's presence, however. French kissing a jackass in public would be less embarrasing...

I wonder if you could shoot Barnes X projectiles through the Baikals/Spartans? As the barrels are separated and can reportedly be somewhat regulated for the load, I don't see why??? Perhaps a 400 gr Barnes X in the .45/70 would start to make a decent load on something bigger.

Any comments.

John,

I shot a box of 200 gr Barnes X through my Valmet 12/30-06, and it resulted in the '06 shooting somewhat higher after that. I think it hammered the center wedge a bit. I re-regulated and went back to Noslers. I think the Barnes may adversely affect the regulating wedges in the Spartan, also. If/when my Spartan 45/70 gets here, I'll try some and report.
