Interesting, that he used a cheap Belgium shotgun to make such a powerful rifle. That goes against all of what I have been told about choosing an action. I wonder how it will hold up in actual use. Never heard of a 52 Romano cartridge, Is it a wildcat?

Interesting video. Thanks for posting.

I am surprised at the caliber. I assume that is a one off caliber but if you are having a gun made and planning to shoot balck powder with lead bullets, a non-standard caliber is possible and, perhaps, good bragging rights with the gang.

With black, the pressure is fairly low so using a shotgun action is possible. Of course, the conversion work is not cheap so perhaps using a better looking donor gun wiuld have made sense. But, if the owner was just planning on having a woods gun, the Eclipes works fine.

All in all, that was interesting.

Cool rifle and ctg - but that replacement front sight is WAY too high, hence low shooting. The regulation sure looks pretty good.
Looks to me the barrels might meet with that load, at about 60 to 70yards. Pretty good. A little bit of load work would have them shooting parallel, me thinks.

Same here. In the video, the ctg. appears to have a lathe - turned primer pocket, on my monitor.
Is it just me, or does he use the phrase "big old cartridge" too much? LOL
Now, I would say a .50 3 1/4 or 4 Bore was a big old ctg.

This 52-110 appears to be a moderately large NEW ctg.

Ha ha. Hence my title.

The shots seem to be crossing at whatever the target distance was. Relatively close two barrel group.

Probably "regulation" was designed to cross. Some gunmakers think this is how it's done. Instead of attempting to shoot as parallel as possible.

I’ll watched it again thinking that it actually looked to be well regulated and see that they are crossing.
I’m curious if he simply used rifled 28ga barrels and turned them down to slip in and solder into the 12ga shotgun barrels.

Yes, You are right, I looked at it again and if he is fireing RT LT, then they are crossing. At the last of the video, it does state that the barrels are lined, and the pic shows original barrels have not been replaced. I wish he would have shown a pic of the muzzle....LLK

Yeah - my mistake. They are crossing at what? 20 yards? Good elevation, though. LOL.
The rear sight appeared to be the one used on "Remington Zouave" .58's back in the 70's.
The front sight was a not very well made brass blade (too high) in a brass base, dovetailed into a very high modern rifle front sight base.
Rifled 28 bore barrels would have been something over .55 calibre ie: + the depth of the rifling.
My chart shows 28 bore as being .55".
Today, we call .54" smoothbores, 28 bore usually.

looks impressive beside of a 45-70 but I dare to say the real big ole 577 BPE 3" will make it small again

because of the headstamp I looked for them https://www.rccbrass.com/?s=500&post_type=product
but RCC brass don't have it in the list.

the other suspect rocky mountain cartridge have a 56 50 romano in the list, must be the same person. don't ask me about the difference to the 56 50 spencer. http://rockymountaincartridge.com/index_htm_files/RMC%20Product%20List.pdf

I suspect the .56/50 Romano would be an easier proposition to converted Spencers or the newly made rifles rather than the 56/50 Spencer itself, which I think was a rim fire in a copper case.

the new made replicas shooting the center fire version wich is made by starline

RCC offer the center fire version

and also the rimfire cases ( for 6 mm flobert blanks as primer) for two different bullet diameter

https://www.rccbrass.com/56-56-spencer-rimfire/

RMC having the 56 -56 and the 56-50 center fire case for original but conversions and replicas

remember the 56-56, 56-52 and 56-50 are all interchangable and the old bigger diamter were all abandoned for the 56-50. don't ask me how they were shooting in older rimfire guns with bigger barrel diameter. this was about outside lubrication changed into inside lubrication, maybe the 56-50 had a hollow bases.

fact is the 56-50 romano must be something else. my first thought was "lathe turned 32 ga brass case"

https://www.gunsandammo.com/editorial/7-shot-wonder-the-spencer-repeating-rifle/248815

this is what the RMC headstamp looks like but this could be changed over time

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a1oFeLPAxw

a .533 Minie fits very well into the cylindrical 32 ga magtech brass case so the lathe turned case with a thicker wall may hold a .520 diameter bullet.
the rim is looking different on .52 Romano so it don't fit into 32 ga shotguns. I have made 12,7x60R 500BPE ( a short german version of the 500 BPE) by using 32 ga magtech brass, you can use it for different stuff.

Unfortunately all brass for “Big old Cartridges “ are expensive now. I will say the gun looks cool to me (I understand no one will confuse it with a Purdey) !!!!!!!!!!
I still like it.

Guessing the rifle is borrowed for the shooting video or possibly just newly acquired?
Hitting low……get out the file and work that front sight to suit. (maybe not his rifle so no filing on sight?)
Like to see a photo of the muzzles.

Would be interested to know:
1) weight of the rifle
2) where it balances relative to the hinge pin
3) actual groove diameter of the barrels

Interesting 1 off project.
