I disagree about the 98 being the brainchild - his brainchild was the predecessor to the 98. I am talking about being WAY ahead of the curve with his brainchild the model 1871 Mauser. This one led directly to the 1971/76, 1971/86, then the 1888, then the ultimate, the model of 1898. Of course other Euro. countries were making similar bolt guns called 1893's, 1894's, 1896's by then. Yes, the 98 was and some would say still is the best of the modern bolt actioned rifles. I have a couple Mark10 Mausers and they are super.
EDITED:
OK, I just actually read the article and agree, speaking of post 1930's - yes.

One has to remember these articles are aimed at a target audience.

The 1871 was the FIRST bolt actioned, centre fire Rifle (I think), seems to me. All others started there. This was mine. On the other side of the action is the stamp Model 1871.

I think the Mauser 1871 was the standard arm of the German East Africa Schutzetruppe (spelling?) of WW1. Without double checking?
I always wanted a crossed an 1871 and a WW1 SMLE for a "wall" decoration ...
