Question:
What does this beauty weigh and what length chambers? If Ben has posted that info I entirely missed it.

Just as a guess based on experience, if this gun is not 13 (and a bit) pounds with an 8 Dram load under a ~900 grain ball or more like 15+ pounds with a 10 Dram load it WILL get exciting.

Fortunately we here in Colorado, USA are fresh out of any Cape Buffalo, Asian Gaur, or Elephant (our original "indigenous people" evidently wiped them out thousands of years ago before any white privilege raised its ugly head). Therefore the need for the real no kidding full power dangerous game 8 Bore loadings of 8-10 Drams is rather moot…..

Being a single shot, any load could be used.

She is a little light - 9lb 10oz

So, start out light, maybe 200grs and work up.

I'll weigh my 8 bore muzzle loader.
I think they are close in weight and I have gone 240grs in that rifle. Of course, there are no extra wads as there will be in this cartridge gun so that may make some difference in felt recoil but the smoothbore should negate some of that - maybe??

At least being a single, double barrel regulation is not needed.

Ben, that's a nice looking gun and obviously of very high quality.

I would like to see a close-up of the barrel flats and the water table as well as any other proofing marks found on this gun.

Your gun is light for an 8b rifle. That is going to be a big factor in your "enjoyment" of this gun. An 8b rifle is quite a handfull to shoot.

Here's a video of one of our members shooting his Henry 8b rifle, which weighs over 16 lbs.

And here I am shooting the very same 8b Henry rifle off the bench (in slow-motion). Notice the cartridges in the foreground just off my right elbow.

Good luck with your new toy, and keep us informed of your progress.

One can clearly see the original "NOT FOR BALL" stamp but I'd think that was because 8 Bore fouling guns generally had tight chokes - since the barrel has been cut, that shouldn't be an issue. I will, however, insure that the barrel has no choke anyway.

1200BAR is a pretty high proof pressure (+/- 17500psi)
Ive read of an 8 being measured at 11,000psi using 10 Drams (270grs) powder with an 880gr .850" ball in a 24" rifle 1500fps. I'd be happy breaking 1000fps with a manageable charge.

Funny thing, the "NOT FOR BALL" stamp has been struck off to read more like "NOT FOR ALL"
I think that's appropriate.

I should think a powder charge in the 7 dram area might work for what is needed.
