Correct size ?
      #369030 - 07/09/22 06:49 PM

I'm new to cast bullets, so I need all the help I can get.....I have a 375x 2 1/2 FNE and I want to try some hard cast slugs in it, so my question is.....with a .375 bore size, is a .375 projectile too small? or what would be the correct bullet diameter for this bore?
My next question is....with powder coated hard cast projectiles, do they need lube? These are all in rifles not pistols

Yuma
normally the best overall is .001-.002" larger than groove diameter, for nitro powders.
BP loads, totally different animal to skin.

This should answer all you questions in regards to coating & lube etc.
Homer did a really good tutorial on it quite some time back, if I find it I'll post it up again.

Barry is correct in saying 0.001” to 0.002” over groove diameter.
Remember that most of the coatings will add a thou or two to EVERY dimension. Some guys get caught with bore riding designs forgetting that now the nose section will be larger, can make chambering difficult in some rifle/cartridge combinations.
Some guys I deal with report better accuracy with lubing and sizing a coated projectile as well. Seems like a lot more work to me, but it’s all about experimentation.

DC.

Thanks for the info,
the reason for this question was that I use a lot of Blackwidow hard cast, coated projectiles which are an excellent product, but they can only size .375 or .379 ( .379 for 38-55 ) and I'm thinking .375 might be a bit small as my Sprinter barrel is .375.

John and Joan at Black Widow are really good people. If you contact them and explain the situation they may even send you a sample quantity of each to test. If not then simply order a minimum quantity of each and try them out.

ps It may be worth asking if the projectiles will handle the velocity even though .375 x 2 1/2 Flanged NE isn't a high velocity cartridge.

Velocity shouldn't be a problem, they're rated to 3000 fps.

have also a .375 2 1/2, would not cast for this so long as .223 rem - 5,56 nato brass is for free in the range trash bin. cut it to 1" length and press a lead core into the brass with the relaoding press.

I did similar in .358 using .30MI Carbine brass, .375 using .223 ammo and .458's using .303 Brit and sized down .250 Savage brass. I left the spent primers in the brass. I annealed the cases.
A 9.5 mm (.375 groove dia.) rifle chamber should have a .365" bore diameter.
So with a bore riding bullet, the bullet needs to have a .365" nose and .375" to .377" outside diameter.
With bullet cast hard enough and coated to withstand 3,000fps, the alloy must be VERY hard & the coating a VERY good lubricant.

You should be running .375” projectiles and coated should not need lube.
Wouldn’t hurt to smear a little something on it though if you like.
Shooting cast in my 375 Rimless Express is an absolute pleasure and your flanged cartridge at cast velocities should be sweet.
You can run coated easily to full speed in that rifle though too.
