Mannlicher Double Set Trigger Question
      #368683 - 26/08/22 05:04 AM

I have a MS 1905 with double set triggers. I have the set trigger mechanism adjusted correctly for accurate target or longer distance hunting. The front trigger used alone gives me almost a 6 pound trigger pull!
My Simson Suhl 1914 hunting Mauser has double set triggers. I was able to replace the front trigger coil spring to reduce trigger pull to 4 pounds. The MS double set trigger is of a different design. Is there anything that I can do to make the front trigger pull more acceptable for snap shooting?

working on a trigger needs alot of experience and when changing something little it could happen very easely you break something.
the opnly help I can give you is to be very carefully whatever you change.

I probably won't change anything on my own. I suppose a competent gunsmith could improve on the trigger pull. It's getting harder to find competent gunsmiths. Most "gunsmiths" do their work on plastic rifles and pistols.

It's mostly the lack of decent leverage that the front trigger used alone has against the sear that results in the felt heavy pull.

The front trigger itself does not have much trigger spring tension on it all by itself. You can see that by pulling the front trigger with the rifle Uncocked.
What you feel is the weight of the spring that the front trigger alone must overcome in it's pull.
..Not heavy at all.

It's the somewhat poor geometry of the low pinned front trigger pivoting and then pushing up against the sear/kicker that makes you experience the heavy trigger pull.

It is in place nicely for the double set let off. But not so great a position for a single trigger pull.
If the front trigger was pinned/pivoted higher in the mechanism to the level of the kicker/sear,,the trigger pull would be much lighter (simple leverage) than they are.

You can replace the coil spring that powers the sear with a lighter one, that just makes less spring tension to overcome when pulling the trigger with the rifle cocked

But risk the sear jumping out of engagement with the bolt sear surface if too light.
It's a balancing act that needs some careful attention.

Polishing sear engagement surfaces can be done but should only be attempted if you absolutely can keep them square to each other and flat.
Usually best left alone as they are not commonly a problem from the factory assembly and any advantage in lessening the single trigger pull will be very small if felt at all by the shooter.

Thanks for the great explanation 2152hq. I removed the trigger mechanism this weekend and had a closer look at it. There's no reason for me to mess with the sear engagement surfaces. They are beautifully polished and crisp. I cleaned the mechanism and lubed the pivoting surfaces.
Looks like the best fix would be for me to try and find a single trigger to swap out the double set triggers. I have a feeling that find one might prove to be very difficult.

Y1903 triggers show up frequently on Ebay, It's a direct swap.

Y1903 trigger (rough, cheap): Y1903 trigger

Y1903 trigger guard: Y1903 Guard

Another guard: 1903 Guard

Hi Rothhammer. I've been looking at Greek parts but there are some differences.
The trigger guard on both my 1903 and 1905 are different in that there is an extended "tail" that runs along the underside of the hand grip.
The design of the Greek trigger is different as well. I can post a pic later on. The 1905 has a trigger spring in a horizontal position and the attachment pivot is an upward triangular shape.
I will also need to find a single trigger plate.

Not this?

The trigger guard on all DST were different than those used on single trigger MS. See parts 49, 49a on the Stoeger page above though the part pictured as 49a is actually for the Take Down Model - a different version of the single trigger guard which incorporates a lever to release the action.

I have been long under the impression that the Y1903 trigger is the same as single triggers for M1903, M1905, M1918, M1910, M1924.

Member Kuduae would surely know, and Joel (Dorleac) has likely done the conversion.

I wanted to update the forum on my progress on my 1905. Last weekend when I had my trigger assembly apart, I measured the length, width and wire diameter of the factory trigger spring. The original spring gave me a trigger pull of 6+ pounds on the front rigger.
A friend of mine gave me information on Sodemann-Springs. He had used the company in the past for doing some trigger work on a pistol. They have an amazing, huge inventory of springs.
I searched through their inventory and ordered several springs (they have a $25 order minimum).
Tonight, I installed the spring that was almost an exact match length and diameter with a wire size 1/2 of the original. I assembled the rifle and tested the front trigger pull. The pull is now 3lbs 10-14oz. I tested the rifle by thumping the butt on the floor and there doesn't seem to be any safety issue. I will thoroughly safety test it when I go to the range on Friday.

Well done fjrdoc!
You've certainly had a win!
How does it go in set mode?

Set trigger mode is the same as it was before. It measures 10-11 ounces.

Safety testing with live ammo is kind of an oxymoron. If you must then test with blanks. Good luck
