Firearms ownership in South Africa
      #36868 - 05/09/05 03:30 AM

Can any one tell me what "hoops I will have to dance through" to lawfully acquire a hunting rifle once I get to South Afrcia.

I have been told by my employer, they will not allow me to take one with me.

Unfortunately, from everything I've been reading, getting a license to own a firearm in RSA has turned into a real nightmare. The police are aproving less than one percent of the applications, and then only after a wait of several months. I sure hope things change.

Contact JJHack over on the AR forums. He is a South African PH from the US. He ought to be able to give you some info. I don't know if he posts on these forums or not. His web site is: http://www.huntingadventures.net/

DD

Congratulations on getting the job!

The new laws make it very difficult indeed for non-residents to import firearms on a long term basis or to acquire firearms here - but I believe it's not impossible if you're willing to go through the hoops.

The people in the Central Firearms Register are fairly helpful but are also very aware that they need to abide by the new laws completely.

Probably the best thing you can do is call them on the phone and ask them the best way to proceed.

Numbers are:+2712 353 6281 or +2712 353 6311

Alternatively you can call Insp Conroy who is the topcop in charge of firearms import at JIA on +27827 872906

I'd have called them for you but I'm travelling for most of today and go to the bush tomorrow.....sorry!

Steve,

Thanks for the good wishes. My boss says No guns, so I won't even try.

After I get there I will be residing in SA for 2 years, and I will find a way to get a hunting rifle, even if it's just one of my beloved Martini's

I'd tell him to stuff it and do just exactly what I please.

My boss is the U.S. Government, and I will be on official travel, and if I want to spend my last two years before retirement in South Africa at governement expense I play by those rules. Rules I knew before I got into this.

I'll find a rifle over there. Again, by playing by RSA's rules. Then in January 2008 I will return to Montana, retire and then they all can get there lip balm out becuase they can all kiss my backside.

But right now, right now I smile and play nice to get what i want.
