When used both eyes open, the dot appears easily (I found) and is suspended right out there on whatever you were aiming at. The body of the dot sight is ghostly. Being cross dominant (changing right to left and back) can be difficult with this sort of "sight".
There are meant to be used with both eyes open.

Glad you resurrected this thread John.

to expand on what I have said. The Picket Post Trijacon Triangle. Use the point of the triangle for distance/accurate shooting, when close and need to be fast just cover your POA with the triangle.

With any coloured Dot sight if it is starry then it is an eye condition, I forget what it is called but I am now starting to have the dots in my aimpoints appear starry.

With my first Aimpoint, it was on a 35 Whelen, I use to shoot the 500 mt metal silhouette targets with it, all in the heart lung area of the animal, this off a bench. So the dot does not have to be small to achieve accuracy at distance, but something like a 4MOA dot will be a hinderance at range.

As I get older, I find the Trijacon getting more use than the Aimpoint in low light or heavy vegetation as I can't see the game as well as I use to.

Rule303

The Holosun thread details a reflex sight I'd like to try out.

Quote:

Why does my dot look misshapen?

Make sure you are looking through the optic focusing on your target, not on the dot.

If you are prescribed corrective lenses be sure to wear them.

Try reducing the intensity 1-2 steps.

A starburst effect or misshapen dot can be caused by astigmatism. You can check this my rotating the uninstalled optic while viewing the dot. If the shape rotates with the optic there may be an electronic or mechanical issue. If the shape does not rotate with the optic, this is how your eye perceives the reflected dot.

I've had a look at the V dot sight. I've been told it doesn't get as starry by astigmatism as the circle dot. No idea of the truth or not of this.

My astigmatism (if I don't wear my glasses) makes the dot look like a slash, angled down from left to right. With glasses, it's a dot.
My red-dot sight is an old Tasco. I have a newer one for a different air pistol and it's a 4 MOA dot. Too big, didn't like it, so the sight sits on a shelf. Not an expensive one, as I think it was only about $55.00.

It is only in the last 3 years that astigmatism has been a problem for me. Last time I looked through an Eotech Heliograph sight, it was not starry, that was about 2 years ago. The triangle in the Trijicon's are sharp as, yes different type of sight.

Nitox if possible try several different sights. If nothing else just in a store. Nowadays there are quite a few good quality Red Dot sights about it may be difficult to chose just one.

I was looking over some red-dot sights in the gun store yesterday.
Amazing differences in them. Some had a 3X magnifying short scope mounted behind them on the same picitinny rail that clamps onto another rail or Weaver style bases.
2MOA were available and would work. They also had a small laser that was visible on the snow outside in the sunshine. I suspect that one might be hard on the eyes if shone there.
Most of the sights I was looking at were in the $500.00 to $900.00 range. Too rich for me.

I have several pistols and one shotgun with reflex (red dot) sights. Most are 2 MOA and one is a 2.5MOA.

A friend uses only 1 MOA refelx sights because he claims they larger dots cover too much of the animal. I find the 1 MOA is too small to rapidly pick up the sight.

I tried a laser but find they are ok for indoor ranges but fail outside. Unlike in the movies, the dot gets lost. I doublt that I would be able to see the dot on a deer at 75 yards.

Cost has been $00 and under and that is money well spent - the reflex sights allow me to see my sights and the target which I would not be able to do in somewhat dim light.

One reflex (Holosun) has both red and green dots as well as circle (open and with a dot). I find the red dot fine but read that a green dot is better for hunting.

One very experienced goose hunter I hunted with used a red dot on his goose gun and said hi really improced his shooting.

Probably a red dot imprioves fast shooting at short range but really doesn't look good on nice double and single shot rifles.
