The .500 S&W cartridge looks like an excellent contender. Except for one feature. It's name. No apologies a pukka howdah pistol cartridge needs an "imperial" named cartridge.

Smith & Wesson just leaves me flat. Fine in a revolver. But not in an Anglo-Indian Howdah pistol.

But easily solved. Do a "creedmoor". "Reinvent" an existing cartridge with a new name. Just Mahe the case slightly longer or shorter, shorter would be easier, and one could have a .500 Howdah Nitro Express. Don't even bother to change the brass case .... Just recognise the .500 Howdah Nitro Express is based on the ....

If I win lotto and have a British gunmaker make me a new Howdah pistol, I've always thought of shortening a .500 NE or a .577 NE case into a pistol length case. The handgun would need to not be overly large and heavy in the action and must have hammers. Do any Brit gunmakers still make guns with hammers? God forbid if one might need to go to Ferlach !!!

A detachable buttstock to make it truly versatile.

And it must be regulated.

some times ago I got a 500 S&W dummy round and it have an impressive look making the 50 AE looking small.
I have say it before and say it again, there is no real problem for any medium to good gunmaker to made a howda pistol out of a 20 ga hammer gun when changing a little bit here and there.

I see in one video, nice lever actions are available in .500 S&W.

Which would be more effective in hunting, a lever action in .45/70 or a .500 S&W?

I think the .500?

On the subject of effectiveness of Howdahs, while any modern Howrah is more a fun gun, than a serious tool, I refer to the video of Phil Shoemaker I recently posted. Where Phil mentions accurate shooting and penetration is more important, than power.

For backing up for bear he mentions he used a .357 revolver for most of his guiding handgun backup. When guiding fishing clients, no longarm being carried. And he lives in the area of highest bear concentration in the world per comments.

Phil says the .357 penetrates more than anything else. This is backed up by the African Hunter magazine tests on elephant skulls. And the .357 is far easier to control than the .44 mag, .460 S&W, and .500 S&W. And more shots could be got off than say just one for the biggerb0 recoilers.

So might not that lesson apply to Howdahs? We think it's a point, almost touching the tiger thing and that was probably accurate a scenario.

If chambered for a .45 Colt, other than reasons of modern availability, or a .357, why not just use a revolver? The idea of a .58 or at least a .500 double barrel pistol is so much more satisfying.

Excellent video with our own NE member "458Win" Phil Shoemaker, an Alaskan Master Guide with 45 years of bear guiding experience.

The enjoyable interview starts off with the 9mm handgun story of defending against a brown bear, and then goes onto many other topics mostly on the subject of bears.

The .460 S&W. One advantage of this cartridge is the ability to use .45 Colt ammunition. In a Howdah, the much lighter projectiles are a big negative.

A 4".44 mag. M29 is VERY controllable. When in shape, I used mine for IPSC with full power loads, 245gr.SWC @ 1,240fps. All it takes is "some" training.
