Car batteries and ?
      #363943 - 26/03/22 10:11 PM

I would appreciate some help and advice.

Car batteries.

I have two batteries in my diesel LandCruiser. One was added by me with an older more mechanical system. Both batteries start the motor. One is somewhat isolated. Much better dual battery systems electronic digital now exist. I am not educated on them!

When in Darwin once and staying at a hotel I dragged a battery up for nightly charging in my room or every second night. To run my fridge freezer in my LandCruiser. Another guy had a fridge and a freezer running in his parked LandCruiser for up to a week. ? Certainly many days. I asked him about it. 3 days at the time. Several more. I could see a battery monitor from a window. Btw no solar panels on his LandCruiser.

I have a big old thumper battery. Use it for fridges orcsome overnight power needs. It has been rebuilt once. No idea what was put in it. Worked well. Got another supposed mainstream multi rechargable marine battery. Not very effective.

Have looked at some new large but very expensive multi recharge lithium batteries.

Interested in some informed comments.

1. I want a rechargable battery in the back of my LandCruiser to keep an engel fridge tuning, and some other stuff. Powered/recharged by the vehicle when driving. Perhaps have a system for a mains plug when parked. Especially when home.

2. A battery for a bush camp or cottage. Probably solar charged. Run a water pump for a gas hot water system. Maybe some other stuff, some lights.

If me, probably supported by a generator. If paying glamping guests, just solar.

Advice, comments?

Thanks.

A mate just put a flat pack 150ah lithium with a built-in 20amp dc/dc charger in it in his car.
Expensive at around $1400 but bloody worth it.
Atm I'm running a 105ah gel deep cycle with a 40amp dc/dc charger that is also a solar regulator and I keep a 300w solar blanket in the Ute.
It's actually small enough that I can use it as a windscreen sun shade and power it from inside the car.

The advantage of the lithium is 4 fold, 1) it charges much faster and an agm, 2) you can run it all the way down where as an agm starts to die if you take it below 50% more then a few times. 3) it lasts much much longer then an agm, they say 6 times, as long but that's optimistic.

If you don't want to fork out lithium money then do what I did and get a gel, the 105ah gel battery actually has more usable capacity then 170ah AGM because much like the lithium you can take it well below 50%, in the case of the gel batteries down to 10% safetly.
That means the bigger 170ah AGM only has 85ah of usable power, the 105ah gel has 94.5ah of usable energy.
It also sits between the agm and lithium in battery life and is only a bit dearer then the AGM and way cheaper then the lithium.
But both the gel and lithium can be mounted in any position unlike an agm.

John, You are very fortunate to live in an area that Toyota still sells Land Cruisers. I was waiting for teh Series 300 in the US but it looks like that will not happen. Asking prices for used Series 200 cruisers is $25k USD above list price.
I have a FJ60 & 62 which are fun but would like a Series 300 for longer trips. A number of parts for my two cruisers are no longer available so I have to buy either after market or used parts.

Mine is 32 years old. A series 80 commercial model from 1990.

An acquaintance or two bought dual cab utility versions. Possibly custom cut. $150,000. I asked one who 8svaround 21, "Don't you ever want to own a house? "

Way out of my price range.

Absolutely no idea what a series 300 is?!

Australia used to be the biggest international market for LandCruisers.

I hope mine lasts till death. Or a big lotto win.
