I have seen on NE member larcher's phone a video of the most dramatic elephant charge with Buzz Charlton. Not public footage.

JB - larcher and his cousin Luc were BOW hunting bull elephant. The elephant bursts from the Bushvedt very close range, JB and Buzz step to the side. Luc was using a camera and doesn't. I think Buzz fired a shot. The elephant puts his head down on top of Luc and pushes him along for maybe up to twenty feet. Maybe another shot and the elephant falls over.

Very dramatic.

Amazingly Luc survived. Broken collar bone and ribs, maybe pelvis, I forget.

Doubly amazing Luc wanted to get out hunting again a few days later and did. Now shooting a rifle. The recoil upsetting his ribs everytime it was fired .... Or something like that.

I don't think this video will ever feature on a Buzz Charlton video ...

I would love to see Larcher's video..that is crazy.. and as you stated, LUC is VERY lucky to be alive.. wasn't his time ..

MY experience.. the elephants in the Zambezi Valley were the most aggressive I have experienced, period.. Thoughts were because of the poachers.. Sadly, that is were Ian the PH was killed as well a year after we hunted together, also by an elephant..

Had more "close" calls there in 21 days than all my other trips to Africa combined.. some very similar to what he described in this article..

THIS trip and all that came with it convinced me I will never again take a PG rifle alone smaller than a 375H&H... While you may be hunting PG, the tuskless cows don't know that.. nor the lioness ..

Kinda like hunting deer in a grizzly's back yard, armed with a Ruger #1 in .218Bee.

I agree with you.

I have often said but not everyone believes me.

If there is a risk of meeting DG while hunting PG the hunters should be suitably armed in case of. A rifle caliber 9.3x64 or 375 H&H Magnum seems also to me to be a very good choice.

The same applies in West Africa, where only birds were hunted in areas with lions. The hunters are often only armed with their shotguns. I recommended multiples times to take at least shotgun slugs with, better than nothing.

When hunting capercaillie in Norway with ErikD with shotguns, he took a couple of slug loaded rounds in case we had a brown bear encounter. I wondered where mine were?!

Actually have read the link.

The amount of irritating advertising on the website is aweful. Bringing the story here.

How to Survive an Elephant Attack

An African PH shares his closest calls from dangerous-game hunts

By David E. Petzal | Published Dec 18, 2019 6:10 PM

African PH, Buzz Charlton. Buzz Charlton
SHARE

I met Buzz Charlton in 1992, on a safari in Zimbabwe when he was a 19-year-old apprentice PH. Buzz’s father was a professional hunter in Kenya, and Buzz has hunted since he was a boy. He has survived attacks by hippo, mamba, and elephant, and has kept both his life and his sense of humor.

On a safari in 2017, he managed to listen to two weeks’ of my “safaris in the good old days” stories without going mad. Buzz is the author of Tall Tales—the Life of a Professional Hunter in the Zambesi Valley. He operates C-M Safaris with his lifelong friend, Myles McCallum.

Q: What’s the most important quality a PH can have?

A: Well, the typical day is 16 hours, most of which is one-on-one with the client. That’s far more time than I spend with my wife. You need great people skills.

Q: What about the client?

A: He needs a sense of humor and flexibility. If you’re after an elephant and you get news that there’s a hell of a buffalo around, it’s buffalo time.

Q: Have you ever thought, This time, I really am going to die?

A: I’ve been in two squashings by elephant, two clawings by leopard, and dozens of charges by all of the Dangerous Four. In the moment, you’re too focused on the job at hand to think about getting killed. It’s afterward that you realize how dangerous it was.

Q: Which was the worst?

A: The elephant squashings. Oddly, both had happy endings. In the first, my tracker had his pelvis pulverized. But after a lengthy stay in hospital, he immediately impregnated his two wives, which he’d been struggling with for years. In the second, a French client had six ribs broken and a lung collapsed. But the doctor discovered a blocked artery, and he ultimately had a triple heart bypass. So that elephant stomping indirectly saved his life.

Q: What do you do when an elephant charges?

A: I used to fire a warning shot, and if the elephant continued the charge, I’d shoot it. After a few close calls with jamming rounds, I did away with the warning shot. I tell my clients that if I shoot, it’s a free-for-all.

Q: What’s the most dangerous game animal?

A: I’ll divide that into two groups: wounded and unwounded. Unwounded elephant cows, without a doubt, and wounded lions. The latter are so well camouflaged and so fast that both luck and skill are required for a happy ending. A wounded leopard has the most chance of giving you a face-lift, but in all likelihood you will survive. If a lion gets to you, it will most likely kill you.

Q: What is the most difficult dangerous-game animal to hunt?

A: Tracking lions in wilderness areas like the Zambezi Valley requires exceptional trackers and luck, but taking a big lion on foot after hours of amazing tracking is the ultimate hunt.

Q: Caliber-wise, what’s the cutoff for dangerous game?

A: For a PH, you need a rifle that shoots at least a 500-grain bullet, because when we shoot, we need to drop the animal. For a client, a .375 and up to whatever they can handle. Every person has a limit. If I shoot anything bigger than a .500, I start flinching.

Q: What’s the most common mistake first-time clients make?

A: Focusing on the big, glamorous animals and turning down the little trophies like duikers and grysbok. After a few safaris, they see the light.

Q: You say it takes luck to get out of some scrapes. Do you ever think, I’d better quit before my luck runs out?

A: No. As a matter of fact, the older I get, the luckier I’m becoming.

Android changed that from bush. But isn't it spelt "Bushveldt"?

Yes crazy video too. Luc was videoing. I think Buzz had a video cameraman, and it was a small copy of that film. For JB's private use.

Luc is lucky to have survived. And a tough guy to go hunting days later. I know nothing of the blocked artery bit.

There are restrictions in some areas, as to bow weight (150 pounds) and minimum arrow weight of 1,000gr., I have heard (in early 2000's).
I don't know for sure, just what was relayed to us in Moose camp by a Texan who said he was having Black Widow make him up a set of
150 pound limbs for his recurve.
He was a big fella, named "Buf". Said his father named him in the Hospital when he was born - Big Ugly F---er.

Similar in looks the guy you met in Bozeman a few years back?? Don't mean big, just ugly..

Yes I am sure there are restrictions..I have heard of them regarding elephant..not sure on the buffalo issue.. I am sure if shot quietly and undisturbed (water hole).. they would drop as easily as anything else... no air, gonna die..

I've heard of slightly overlapping ribs. Is this true?

I almost shot one of those little trophies while bird hunting in RSA. Had the shotgun on it at about 20 yards before I realized that it was not a Texas Jack rabbit. I shot and ate rabbits when a kid, it seems silly to fly half way around the world to shoot animals so small they will only feed two people.
