Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag by Jim Corbett - Part 1 | Audiobook (English)

#JimCorbettaudiobook

10 Apr 2021
A hundred or so years ago, the Garhwal region in the Himalayan foothills of India was suffering from the depredations of a leopard that for reasons which can be explained, had adopted an unnatural diet. The trail of the dead it left behind over the next eight years from 1918 to 1926 cemented its reputation as the most feared animal of all time.
Join Colonel Jim Corbett as he takes us on an epic adventure that is a tale for the ages. It's laced with high drama, intensity, chase, and soulful writing infused with empathy and compassion. It's an ode to the patience and resilience of thousands of simple and hardworking villagers in the face of terror and hardship and the steely resolve of one hardy individual to rid them of their menace.
This audio contains the first part of the book and stops at a natural interlude in the narrative. The rest can be accessed in part 2

Colonel Jim Corbett picks up his extraordinary tale of his hunt for the Rudraprayag leopard, where it left off in part 1 at the end of chapter 14 when exhausted after prolonged exertion Corbett leaves Garhwal for his home in Nainital to recharge. In chapter 15, Corbett returns to Garhwal in pursuit of the man-eater and begins his tale with a small fishing interlude. A gripping narrative follows that builds up to a singularly epic conclusion.

The Natural World - The Man Eaters of Kumaon (1986):

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sMo2d1b1cP4

A good semi fictional semi historical movie based on Corbett at Naini Two at home and hunting the maneaters of Kumaon. The Chogarh maneater and the Thak maneater.

Includes an elephant drive and real historical images, footage.

Lovely Indian landscape scenes and wildlife.

A bit Greenie but possibly appropriate for Corbett in his latter Indian years. Corbett was a promoter of the need to conserve and use wisely wildlife. That Indian game was not unlimited.

A movie well worth watching for pundits of double rifles, tigers, shikari and safari.

Chowgarh Man Eating Tigers by Jim Corbett

|

Audiobook (English)

15 May
2021
Representing one of Colonel Jim Corbett's most sustained efforts to bring down man-eaters, the story of the Chowgarh tigers- first published privately in "Jungle stories" in 1935 and then re-published in "The Man-Eaters of Kumaon" in 1944 - features incredible details about how the elusive tigers terrorized villagers in the Kumaon district of the Indian Himalayan foothills in the mid to late 1920s. In vintage Corbett style, the writing is unpretentious, devoid of embellishments, and replete with interesting anecdotes about village life in the Himalayas.
Staying with the narrative until the end will reward the listener with possibly the most dramatic finales in all of Corbett's hunts.
Turn off the lights, sit back, close your eyes and enjoy!

So Corbett was awarded a commenorative plaques Rigby .275 rifle for the killing of the Champawat tiger.

In this story, Corbett uses a .275 Mauser rifle one handed to kill the Chowgarh tiger.

Was it the same rifle?

The very first of the man-eaters vanquished by Jim Corbett was the famous Champawat man-eater tiger in the ye tryar 1907. Responsible for 436 documented kills, the Champawat tigress remains the deadliest animal in history.
A couple of quick reminders. Please use headphones if possible. These earlier readings were done with little understanding of the intricacies of audio recording and it shows in the sound quality. Also, the cover art illustration is actually a depiction of a scene from another Jim Corbett's story of the Chowgarh Tiger and not from Champawat man-eater, which I uploaded by mistake.

Probably because I had the descriptions of the two paintings mixed up as displayed on these forums.
