Looking for a used .470 Double. Anyone selling?
      #36299 - 22/08/05 01:15 PM

I am looking for used .470 that I wont mind scratching and getting it beat up. Anyone selling or know of anyone who may have one. I am looking for something on the lower end of the price scale.

What is the least I can expect to pay?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can find a Smirkel, you might get one for $7K.

For a Searcy, $8K or $8500.

For a Krieghoff, probably the same as a Searcy.

For a Chapuis, probably $10K. There is one on sale right now in the Deluxe grade with an extra set of 20 gauge shotgun barrels for only $13K at www.heritagearms.net. I have fired the rifle offhand and it shot well.

For a Heym, $12K to $14K.

For a California Rigby, $18K to $20K.

For a vintage beater English gun, $11K to $20K.

For a nice vintage English gun, $25K to $200K.

For a German or Ferlach gun, $12K to $200K.

So here are some good deals:

Austrian Guild .470 for $10.9K at Schwandt classic firearms:

Hambrusch .500 NE at Cabelas for $12.5K:

Cogswell & Harrison .475 NE for $10.9K at Champlins:

One thing to consider before buying used...

If getting a Searcy or a Chapuis, a new one built for you isn't much more than the cost of a good used one and the price on a new one includes a stock built to your measurements at no extra charge. If you're not the "standard size human" used as the basis for most factory stocks, the comparatively small savings of buying used are more than offset by having the gun built to fit.

If buying used, and you're not standard size, you have to look at guns until you find one that fits, or have someone bend and adjust the stock, and the whole procedure of "find and buy and modify" could take longer than the delivery time on a new one.

Richard

Thanks for the response 500grains. I had been looking for a post like this for a while but couldn't find one.

I was originally hoping to find one with some rust and scratches for $3k-$5k but I guess thats out of the question.

Recently there was a listing on gunbroker.com for A Merkel listing for $6900 opening bid, but I think they sold it.

Thanks Again,

PS: I asume smirkel is AKA as Merkel!

Thanks for the response Richard. Unfortunately a new one is way out of my budget. I was hoping to get one for $3K-$5K but the previous post by 500grains gives me a more realistic price range. I am not sure if I have any other options. What I really need is a big bore double that will shoot fairly straight and extract the shells. Cosmetics and brand are insignificant. Should I be looking for another caliber? Is it impossible to find one for $3K to $5K?

Thanks,

I saw a 470 built on a Browning SXS action at a gunshow in Vancouver BC awhile ago. I think it was around $4000 US. Too be honest I would not buy a $4000 bigbore Double without knowing all about it and Doubles in particular.

You may find a 400 or smaller for $4000 if you are really lucky and willing to take an odball caliber.

Do you reload?

Considering that it would only cost a thousand bucks to refinish and reblue one, nobody is going to discount a $10K rifle by $7K just for some cosmetic issues.

There is an old Searcy O/U .470 and 20 gauge set on Gunbroker for $8K. It was built on a Ruger Red Label shotgun. This one is totally screwed up because it is magnaported. Personally I would not give more than $500 for it due to that. Realistically the price is going to have to drop to $3K or $4K, unless a fool walks in and buys it. You could email the guy an offer.

Considering the prices of doubles today, you have an unrealistic price range for a used one. The only thing you can get in that price range is a 9.3X74R O/U. I'd say just go out and get a good bolt gun and save your money for a double in a few years.

More than likely I will stick to what I am looking for otherwise I am going to end up selling it and buying what I really want in the end.

Yes I do reload on a dillon 550B. Thats one of the reasons why I was looking for a 470. They have a conversion for the press to allow it to reload 470.

If I can get a really good price on another standard dangerous caliber I would deal with buying another press.

I would prefer to stay away from the odd calibers.

You guys have given me some great info. Looks like my target will be a used merkel in 470. and increase my price range to $6K to $7K. $6k if I am really persistent and lucky. Lets see what happens.

an o/u is out of the question.

The other concern I had was shooting this gun since I shoot lefty. Would not having a cheek piece be a problem for me to shoot? Would it be a big deal for a gunsmith to make me a new but stock?

What do you guys think about the Blaser S2. I had a guy that was giving me a price of $6500. To good to be true.

Also, are the prices in the blue book somewhat off? A merkel 140-2 at 90% lists for $4550. Thats where I originaly based my budget from. What constitutes 90%?

Thanks Guys for all your input.

The Blue Book prices on Double Rifles are nowhere near realistic. They have no idea as to the variations and options that add to the price.

A Merkel is do able in your price range. Some of the posters here like the Blaser. I believe there is a thread somewhere hereabouts.

Good Luck

Come on Mickey, tell us what you really think of the Blaser S2.

I would rather hunt buffalo with a 12 gauge SxS shotgun shooting slugs than a Blaser S2 in .470. The Blaser is a toy not set up for dangerous game use.

Now forget that Smirkel business and get yourself a gun that you can be proud to own. Here is a Westley Richards 577/450 for just $7950.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=36253675

How about a .577 with extra 10 gauge barrels for $8K?

But if you insist on a Smirkel, here is one in .470 for $7600. http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976550864.htm

You have more hope of winning the lottery than finding a 470 at that price, stop dreaming ,if there was a 470 for that price it would be stuffed ,stolen, or run over by a 4x4 on a safari and no good anyway .Face reality if you want something good ,like all us peasants you have to .
A.save up for it and make sacrifices
B.go see the bank manager and get a loan
C.get a credit card or increase the one you have ,destroy the card, then cancel it after you have paid it off
D.sell all your crappy half arsed guns you own[like 500 grains suggests] and buy quality that works
E.buy a 410 double barrel and shoot slugs out of it
If you want a double rifle there is no easy way around it ,like buying a house ,new car ,getting married etc .Save up and buy a second hand Merkel or a Kriehoff from $7000.00

Hate to point out the obvious, but that WR in 500grains' post appears to be chambered for the .577/.450, which is probably the old black-powder Martini-Henry cartridge, not the .500/.450 NE. Even the express load in that cartridge is no comparison with the .470!

No personal experience with the Blah-zer but share 500grains general sentiments. IMHO Brit is usually best.

Not to belabor the point, but you will have to pony out about $7k or more. Here is how I did it. I sold a bunch of guns for $2500 and charged $5000 on my credit card to get a new Merkel 375H&H. The CC is now paid off. For my Chapuis 470 I traded my (13 year old) mercedes for it. I now have one less insurance payment, a cleaner gun safe, and a pair of doubles to last a lifetime. I shoot these things 10x more that I ever shot those old remingtons and rugers. Now regarding being a lefty - don't worry. Your body will adjust and you will be able to shoot it just fine.

Those people came here and registered 01/03/05 as screen name Safaririflesales.
Their web page is
Safaririflesales

They seem to have access to what everyone else has. They don't seem to have anything of their own. Everything you "Click" on in their site takes you somewhwhere else.

That Searcy Field Grade (not an PH) at Lewis Drake and Safari Cleaing House was one and the same...it was sold when I checked in April of this year....ditto on the comments above.

Seems mid $7's is where used late model 470's start. With today's currency exchange Merkels, Chapius etc have taken a jump (new) in the last 3 months. I ordered a new Searcy in early June.

Jveiguela, There is one thing you need to understand! You can count on a $1000 premium on the price of any equal quality double rifle if it is chambered for 470NE, over just about any other chambering. The cartridge isn't worth the premium, ballisticly! Many others will do anything just as well as the 470NE, with a $1000 discount in price!

IMO, you will be lucky to find an odd chambering in a black powder double rifle for your very conservative price range.
That doesn't mean you wont find a bargain, stranger things have happened!

Some one suggested you could maybe find one cheaper in one of the .400 calibers. That may be so with some of the odd balls, but a 450/400 3" will again cost you a primium, over others of like size.

I think if your heart is set on a 470NE, then I'd buy a new Searcy at $9500, or a Merkel at about the same price new, though list is $10,595 for a new Merkel, they can be found at lower price. Used the Merkel will set you back around $8500 if it is like new. My money would be on haveing Butch Searcy build me a PH model to order for $9500.

If you can live with the cocking system, one can pick up a Krieghoff double at a real reasonable price used, but even then you are looking at $7K, to 8K for one in 470NE. Like you I wish I could find a few double rifles in the $3K-5K range, if I did, I'd refinance the house, and car to get the money!
