Buying a .22 RF handgun will make my life easier!
      #362408 - 20/02/22 11:05 PM

In SA the policed commissioner dictator who actually runs the state, the police have given six months grace to June from club chits to maintain a handgun licence.

Lucky for me. I attended this week an indoor competition shoot to finalise my six shoots for the year. As usual one comp with the .22 RF and one cat 3 centrefires. Used a club Walther Q5 Match in 9mm. So 3x RF shoots, and 3x cat 3 centrefire. Usually I do 7 or 8 shoots a year. A mixture of RF and CF.

BUT I didn't realise I now need 6x cat 3 shoots! Now owning my own handgun now, I need 6x comp shoots in that category. Or 4x for each category if more than one covered. Luckily the chit amnesty is in place else I would be needing to be shooting three days in a row this week.

However I have only had the pistol 2 or 3 months, does that have any effect. No matter anyway till June.

Now if I buy a .22 RF next, and they can be cheap. I could do 4 shoots a year x2, 4x Cat 2 .22 RF, and 4x Cat 3 centrefire. Only need one more attendance, at 4, 2 shoots per attendance, rather than a minimum of 6 and one or more comps each time.

Owning more guns makes life easier.

A .22 RF would be fun. New thread idea, so what should I buy?

So far I have only used a Ruger, don't know the model, but you can guess which easily. Also used a 1911 style .22 RF which was less accurate than the Rugers.

I don't mind the Rugers. Accurate easy to shoot, and cheap. I don't want to spend a lot. Would possibly like to scope the .22 RF if a semi auto.

Perhaps a REVOLVER RF?

Thoughts and suggestions, please.

I can only buy a handgun once every six months so that makes it May or June.

A S&W .22 on a K frame, model 17 (Masterpiece) lists over a grand, US. they are VERY accurate and DA.
https://www.smith-wesson.com/product/model-17
Ruger single action (Cold 73 styling) non adjustable sights
run under $300.00 US.
https://ruger.com/products/wrangler/models.html
Ruger adjustable sighted convertables are around $800.00
https://ruger.com/products/newModelSingleSixConvertible/models.html

I suspect semiautos are less expensive all round.

I see a oiccatinny rail can be fitted.

Do you guys use normal open sights or some sort of dot sight?

Keep the suggestions flowing. Also why you recommend it. Thanks.

I'd get a sig mosquito, mostly because they are a cool looking little handgun, but if I really cared about scores I'd get a 22/45 hunter because it looks kinda cool and is very accurate.
Unless you care about scores and don't mind dropping the coin in which case a Hammerli X-esse IPSC.

The best .22 rf for you depends entirely on what you want it to do.

While the standard Ruger Mk whatever has a good reputation for both accuracy and reliability, the 22/45 frequently fails on the reliability side. Possibly something to do with the feed angle, but whatever the cause its a frequently encountered problem. Then again you may be on of the lucky ones.

The S&W 17 is a great gun. I prefer the older style, it doesn't have the barrel underlug, but YMMV.

The Ruger single six is a fun gun especially if you're into single actions. Maybe not the most accurate as the rifling is designed as a compromise between .22rf and .22WM.

Sig Mosquito looks cool, but poor trigger, poor sights, poor reliability. Basically a POS.

A second hand High Standard would be ideal if you want top line accuracy. But be aware they weren't designed for high velocity ammo and may have frame cracks if a previous owner ignored that. Still love the old world milled steel, fine adjustment and quality.

1911 conversion units etc. Forget them if you want accuracy. Only purpose is to rack up attendances.

I like Glocks but haven't had a chance to try the G44 so can't comment.

I have numerous 22 rimfires..

2 Colt Woodsman... 1-S&W 41..
Have 2 of the Ruger shown here..both are super accurate...

Have a Ruger 22 revolver single six which is reasonably accurate.. Have a newer S&W Victory which is actually very accurate.. Out of all of them I like the S&W 41 probably the best.. after that it really doesn't seem to matter much.. but the S&W Victory is nice to shoot, accurate and has better factory sights than the Rugers I have..

Oh, I also have 2 little Ruger Bearcats.. one older model and one newer model..

FN come out recently with a 22Rimfire that is suppose to be nice..

One thing I forgot to suggest was a Thompson Contender with a .22rf barrel. I'm not into single shot pistols, but know several who wear by their T/Cs (and have the rim fire metallic silhouette scores to prove it). It gets back to just what you want from a rim fire. Of course the T/C has the big advantage of interchangeable barrels. A.22LR for one match, a 44 Rem Mag for the next, maybe a 375 JDJ, 45/70 etc. How do the police in South Australia treat multiple barrel handgun systems?

My bro still has the Model 17 he bought back in the 70's. We (when hot to trot - like 1980's) used to be able to shoot the sailer out of a Players cigarette package at 20yards, standing 2 handed, of course. We shot it single action.
Very accurate revolver, in the day. No reason to think the new ones wouldn't be as accurate. We were both revolver shooters in those days & did a lot of it.

As a side note, the Ruger semi-auto with the light weight, 4" bl. in .22LR is a terrific "aerial" shooting handgun. Plinking at hand-thrown targets was easy with that one. It "pointed" perfectly - didn't even have to use the sights. Mind you, that style of shooting was close range - and accomplished one handed.

Sig mosquito is no longer made 9r marketed by Sig after lots of bad reviews, user comments.

No single shots. It's my first .22 RF handgun.

I assume multiple barrel handguns are ok. Rifles are. I am not sure of the legalities of multiple barrels. Imo zero issues. But recently was asked for photos of the markings of every Mauser m03 barrel I have.

I do like the Rugers Mk X',s. Simple and shoot well.

Uses? Legally I think I can only use it at a club for target shooting. I would never use it for ad hoc plinking or trying to shoot a rabbit.

Owned it for over 30 years. Shoot it most weeks.

If you are purely target shooting at say a 10/25/50 yd range, I suggest a Ruger. The price is right and accuracy is excellent. Semi-autos are great fun to shoot.

However, if you also will carry the handgun while hiking or hunting, I suggest a DA revolver (like a S&W17) which has the advantage of also shooting 22 CB caps which are quite and, at short range, accurate and stout enough to kill a pigeon. I have shot 22 CB caps indoors, using a small trap and not disturbing others.

Now, if available and you want some excitement, buy a S&W 53. Shooting 22 CB caps and 22 LR are great fun but shooting a 22 Jet is much better. BTW, some "learned" scribes claim that the Jet backs out the cylinder; howevee, in owning a S&W 53 for 30 years, I have not found that to be true. Maybe I fail to grease my cylinder??

RB - the jet works in it's pressure range due to the taper apparently, worked out by S&W many years ago.
I think perhaps, "someone" seeing the taper "thinks" it will back up and impinge on the recoil shield, binding the cylinder, thus wrote it up as a fact. Many "old wives tales" originate that way, I am certain.
It does stand to reason, that S&W would not have brought out the gun if that was the situation, with recommended loads. I can sure "see" it happening though, if attempting to get rifle ballistics out of the handgun.

Daryl,

I believe you are 100% correct. BS reports by scribes whose experience consists of telling tales and/or trying the make a gun or cartridge into something that it wasn't designed for have wrecked some good cartridges and guns. (Think 264 Win which lost out to 7mm Rem mag - actually 2 peas in a pod).

The 22 Jet is a fun cartridge, particularly if one handloads but even in the 8 3/8" barrel, it cannot make the velocities that some scribes suggested.

If it was legal, that would be fun, plinking away in the house at a target in a cartridge trap. Reminiscent of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, who had an indoor range in his castle at Konopiste.

A .22 RF "cap gun" or an air pistol or rifle.

Ruger Mk IV Target .22 RF.

I will probably order one.

Should it be stainless steel silver or blued?

Still need to acquire. For obvious reasons haven't.

I like the longer fluted barrelled model. But bloody expensive.
