Meaning of "CP" mark on barrel flats on 1880s double rifle
      #361980 - 14/02/22 09:36 AM

Can someone tell me the meaning of a "CP" mark on the front (muzzle) end of barrel flats on an 1880s London proofed double rifle. Has Alex Henry rifling and appropriate patent use marks. No numeric value stamped indicating bore. Listed as a 450.

I am NOT asking about a stylized CP under a crown. Just capital letters by themselves on the flats.

Don't know for sure, but a name of the maker/retailer and a picture might help?

Colour me ignorant, but what "muzzle barrel flats" are you talking about? The rib?
The barrels are round, are they not?

Muzzle end of the flats. So furthest from the breach. But no where near the muzzles. EM Reilly. Working on a pic. Sorry for the confusion

It could be a copying of the London proof mark

This is my E M Reilly 10 bore rifle posted here from almost certainly the same era, 1870 - 1880

Tks -- do not know the meaning of CP.

One might presume it means cordite proof, however the gun would have cordite proof marks, would it not?

Based on the black powder proof mark and Henry rifling, it’s unlikely to be a reference to cordite. I believe the patent use numbers on the barrels put this around 1883 and cordite came about in 1889.

Interesting, I have a Manton top lever hammer double in 577/500 with "CP" engraved at the muzzles between the barrels. The water table and flats show the expected black powder proofs with no mention of cordite. The plot thickens.

Possible that it would be the barrel finishers mark, tho on a double “usually” seem to be found between the barrel flats and fore end hanger.

Friend of mine, now passed, sent a double Westley Richards 10 bore to Holland and Holland back in the very early 70's for 'testing' as the action was a bit stiff. H&H wrote back and said this was due to it not being fired - at all and that it would loosen up a bit with shooting. The they also requested to cordite proof the gun, due to it's excellent condition. This was agreed to and the gun now bears cordite proofs for the 2 7/8" 10 bore shell. This was an early 1880's shotgun.
I shot that gun on trap, at the Smithers R&G club. Nice!! Handled like a champ.

I appreciate all the input so far. I purchased and received (today) the rifle in question. 8.6lbs. 450 express.

Pics to follow.
