Unknown belgian double rifle 8x57 JRS
      #361837 - 11/02/22 11:55 PM

Hi,

I purchased an unknown double rifle in caliber 8x57 JRS to be used on driven hunts. It's a nimble gun with a really solid lock up.

I was wondering if anyone would have an idea of who has made it? There aren't many stamps or markings and as far as I can see it looks like the mono-bloc was proofed earlier than the barrels.

I hope you can access the pictures through my google pictures drive linked below.

Best regards,

Byrackan

Can't imagine why the maker/retailer wouldn't want their name plastered all over that!

Marvelous compact hunting double!

...and really, the build quality and exquisite finish is far more important than a name.

Yes a very nice high quality double!

Monobloc has the letter h which is 1929.
Barrels have underlined letter W or w.
W is 1999.
w is 1984.

I think it looks more like a capitol W 1999, but not certain.

The monobloc appears to have a shotgun proof mark which is the elongated omega shape with what looks like maybe a 20 or 28 stamped inside.

Sorry but no idea who the action or barrel maker might have been.

It is certainly a beautiful and very usefull rifle.
Thankyou for showing us!

Haha, what a nice comment, thank you! I agree! I look forward to take it out hunting.
My thought is that the barrels have been resleeved at some point perhaps, maybe 1984 (my guess by the markings). And that maybe the makers mark or signature was on the original barrels.

I agree! My thoughts are that perhaps it have been resleeved from a 20 or 28 gauge to rifle barrels in 1984 (I think it’s 84 rather than 99 because of wear, but it could be either).

Based on pictures online I’ve seen a resemblance to guns from Dumoulin but nothing is certain.

Thank you! I look forward to shoot it!

In the UK many double guns were made by the likes of Webley and other makers and then sold either in the white or completely finished to other regional gunsmiths. You do see a number that are un named. I have two little 410 single barrel shot guns - one with no name on it, the other with j Hooton, Liverpool and i learnt to shoot with another almost identical gun marked Army and Navy. I have a combination gun marked Heinrich Munch, Aachen, but from serial number and proof marks I identified it as built by Hambrusch in Ferlach and they confirmed this.

From the pictures of the 8x57 look for details on the Belgian proof marks, and that will give more detail. There were are guilds of gunmakers In Birmingham, London, Ferlach, Liege, the Basque Country, Suhl etc and now in Italy - all of whome were and building and making guns for the trade. Many British brands now have their guns made in Italy, but marked with British names.
