Do you need a muzzle brake???

Do You Need a Muzzle Brake On Your Rifle?

A muzzle brake will tame recoil and may improve your rifle’s accuracy. It may also deafen you. Here are the pros and cons to consider before adding a muzzle brake to your favorite rifle

Interesting. I have a custom made brake on my .375/06IMP. Yeah - I hear you, that rifle shouldn't need one.
Since I'm pretty much shooting only 300gr. now & that is what the 'brake' is tuned for, I like it. Much easier to shoot and the muzzle hardly rises during the recoil.

Controlling muzzle rise is a good thing for a hunting rifle. Hard to argue against that, especially when it can be done at reasonable cost and negligible adverse effect on the shooter or others..

IMHO, the main reason for a muzzle brake is to reduce recoil and with the fact that type device usually raises the noise level and side blast, both the shooter and others nearby may be adversely affected.

Answer to ?, it depends.

Most of my rifles have brakes on them. Of course, that’s because the brakes are suppressor mounts. I rarely shoot rifles I suppressed anymore.

I’m not a fan of shooting next to people using brakes. Shot with a friend at an indoor range a couple of years ago and he had an AR pistol in 5.56, I tried to stay as far away from him as I could.

Some guns need them, my mate used to use a 338/378 wby mag and it would have been damn near unshootable without one.
Although with one it was physically painful to be anywhere near when it went off.
I had a break on my 375H&H, but that was a vais muzzle break that didn't increase the noise by much and it was a 6.5lb gun.

I posted this to see the response.. seems fairly unanimous.. people hate them when another shooter is using one nearby --at a range, etc..

Personally I don't use them.. have lots of big boomers.. 300RUM, 338RUM, 375RUM, 416's 458's.. I refuse to hunt with one.. will not wear ear plugs while hunting.. if it becomes too much in terms of recoil one day, I will switch to a lighter caliber.. probably a 6.5 Creedmoor... Rumor has it, that is the best caliber EVER..

Answer? No. If you can't cope with the recoil, shoot smaller. Simple. Aweful things.

The closest and only thing I have is the magnaporting on the 12 g Tikka/Valmet barrels on my multi barrel system. Bought that way.

The suppressor on my recently purchased X Bolt 7mm WSM is designed to cut recoil by 1/2 and noise by 2/3rds.
It is amazingly efficient at doing both. The integral s/s muzzle brake in the suppressor is guaranteed for 20,000 rounds.

Interesting as a suppressor cuts noise while a muzzle brake increases it.

I have never heard of a suppressor reducing recoil before?

I am guessing if gases are not being blower out, the force is less?

Suppressors don’t actually reduce the recoil energy, they spread it out over a longer time period so it only feels like it’s less (think shove vs. punch to your shoulder). That’s why the PRS guys use brakes instead, the longer recoil impulse with the suppressor makes it harder to keep on target to spot your shots.

There was a fellow over in New Zealand who put a suppressor on his .22-250 and it allowed him to spot his own shots. Usually, that is not possible due to muzzle jump.

Suppressors have been on every rifle at every LR school I have attended.. all were chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor ( you may have heard of that caliber?? ) anyway, I was easily able to spot my shots at all distances.. out to 1400yrds at the last one..

Well, it’s the answer that PRS guys give me when I ask why they don’t shoot suppressed at matches.

At long range, it is much easier to spot your hits. I was able to see that at 1000yards with my Browning .300 WinMag.
There is a big difference in seeing hits at long range and seeing them at 100 to 300yards.
Even the .17Rem and .222 Sako Varmint rifles, I only see about 75% of the hits.
When shooting field rats my buddy, using a sporter Sako .22-250, saw zero hits.
We put a medium varmint barrel on it chambered for .17AckBee and not he sees every hit, even though shooting the same speed at the .17Rem. does, but with 20gr. bullets.

In Canada, you will see no rifles, match or otherwise with suppressors on them.

The military likely has a few, though.

The muzzle brake on the English Sniper Rifle I shot out at our range, in .338 Lapua ($10,000.00 for the rifle and $5,000.00 for the scope) had a very effective brake.
It's felt recoil was less than the Vangard .243 I was shooting that day.
However, it blew my hat off the bench beside the one I shot that rifle from, with it's bipod.
The hole I put onto the fellow's target, 1/2 mooned the hole he put on it after installing the scope. It was only at 100 meters.

I do have one on my Sako TRG 42 in 338 Lapua..have a NF scope on it..

I was spotting my hits when shooting at the human silhouette at 1972 yards. Could see them very clearly actually...

Yes they certainly do help and work..I just refuse to have one on a hunting rifle..

What about on my Jeffery double adding a muzzle break? Do you think it might spoli its looks? Surely new buyers would appreciate the improvement?

These Gunworks suppressors have a built brake but most suppressors have internal baffles which probably act as a brake as well. To me the 7mm WSM has less recoil than my lightweight 7mm08. My son thought the recoil a bit more than his 7mm08 but his 08 is suppressed whereas mine is not
He also has a suppressed 223 which is real sweet to shoot, his lightly build 9yo son shoots it easy.

With no ear protection the WSM gives just a crack about the same as a 22WM RF. We were shooting the 7mm WSM in the paddock beside my sons house and his wife couldn't hear it inside the house.

Like I noted, I was not able to spot 100% of my hits on gophers with the Sako A1 .222 varmint mode. That rifle is using a 40gr. Blue Barnes HP at about 3,500fps.

I suspect a suppressor would allow 100% visuals, as it did for the fellow in New Zealand.
