Planning your last African Safari
      #36117 - 19/08/05 12:36 PM

Let's say you've been fortunate enough to go on several Safaris, and you've taken your share of plains game, and perhaps the odd Buffalo or Leopard. Now you want to make one final trip to Africa to hunt for a maximum of 5 animals. What would be on your wish list? By the way, money's no object.

I cannot imagine a "last safari" unless I were terminally ill. And in that case it would be 'galloping lions' (chasing a lion on horseback until he charges, then jump off and try to kill him before he gets you).

If it were my last safari, I'd have to include several things that are just fun to hunt. Lion and Leopard would have to be there along with elephant. To hunt lion and leopard, however, you'd have to hunt something that would be good for bait. So if we were limited to five animals, that would force you to hunt other things that would be great hunts themselves but would also be good to hang in trees. That would, of course be buff and hippo. You could get 6 lion baits from these two or even more for leopard.
So if we were capped at 5 animals, wanted a great last hurrah, needed bait, then my choices would be lion, leopard, ele, hippo, and buffalo.

I haven't hunted there, but I'll be bold, and prove I'm a weirdo...

I remind you in advance of your use of the term "wish list" as well as your statement, "money's no object." Also some of what I think would be ideal is currently illegal.

Anywhere in Africa? Five animals? The five animals would be a buffalo..one in Zimbabwe, one in Botswana, one in Tanzania, one in the Congo, one in the Central African Republic...and I'd be flying between those destinations in a Tiger Moth or a Stearman using just a chart, a wristwatch, and a compass, no modern navigational equipment allowed. Come to think of it not all the pioneer types had a map and those who did probably ripped it out of National Geographic...so I guess I could save weight by leaving the accurate charts at home. And for armament, I'd want an old Oberndorf Mauser in 9.3 x 62 or .404 Jeffery, ie, something that was actually in common use 70+ years ago.

This would be my idea of ideal, at least until some animals eat the fabric off of the plane...

Richard.

I would prefer that this "final hunt" was done in western/central africa. My bag of 5 animals would consist of: Giant Eland, Forest Elephant, Bongo, Lion (tracked, not baited!), and finally a 100 pound+ Elephant to round things off.

Since I haven't had my First Safari I am going to list the dream list I could never afford.

1) Lord Derby Eland
(Oh Hell, I'll just take one of every subspecies of Eland in Africa! )

2) Lion & Lioness

3) Forest Buffalo

4) Bongo

5) Hippo/12'+ Croc Combo

I'm sorry I couldn't stop with 5

I would be just as happy with a last basic plains game safari in a country I'd never hunted, just to mix it up.

Hi Erik

As we got no news from You, I would have sworn You have been processed into mashed potatoes by an irrated ele
or put in jail in Norway. I am knowing no country where the police is this long letting a sucker shoot at trailers.

My guess will be Anne Catherine kidnapped You for hot holidays in a fairly cold country. By the by, it's St Bernard's day my saint's day and it's snowing in France..........

My list wouldn't be a novelty :

1 mountain nyala
2 bongo
3 sitatunga
4 giant forest hog
5 leopard or lion with a bow.

JB,

I have not been turned into mush from an elephant, nor have I been jailed for shooting at trailers passing by my house while drunk. Yet.

But I have been kidnapped by my wife, and am still with her on vacation. My pictures from Zimbabwe are at home, and thus, I will post a report when I return back there shortly.

It is not snowing here in the Oslo fjord (unlike you in France ), and I am sitting here in only a bathing suit! One would think it was the other way around.

Erik

Oh wow!, how could I have left Situtunga off the list? The spiral horned antelope really get me pumped up.

Hi Erik,
I was right, You have been kidnapped.
Yes it's snowing in France (and Spain) on the Pyrénées Moutains and only over 2500m (7500 fts) . For the rest of France, about 20°C cause the weather is cloudy .

Mike What do You think of :
- lesser Kudu
- Gerenuk
- royal antelope (the tiniest duiker)
they don't require much space in your living room
and the for the others not from Africa
- JAGUAR (my wildest dream)
- BABIROUSSA (Borneo's pig)

I love the Lesser Kudu. In some ways I like them better than their bigger cousins. Perhaps because they usually have such vivid stripes on their sides. The Gerenuk really doesn't do much for me, despite their odd appearance. I like hunting the small duikers - I developed an itch to hunt them about 8 years ago.

I consider the Jaguar to be the most magnificient cat there is! What magnificient markings! Too bad they can't be imported into the U.S.

I'm not familiar with the Babiroussa. Perhaps someone would be so kind as to post a photo of one.

Last year, I lost one of my very best friends. At 45 he was strong as an ox and in fantastic physical condition. He died on a float trip of a brain aneurysm. Since then, I plan most of what I do as it were my last. While I can't afford the most magnificent safari (my first one is less than a month away), I did get off my keister and book one. I will hunt this one and relish every second, just as I did the last two weeks on this year's sheep hunt. I did not get a sheep, though had a few in my scope on a couple of occasions, but this was a fantastic hunt and the hardest I've had. I enjoyed every second of it, even the worst.

I would hope my last safari would involve someone very special and close to me, whether it is my wife or a good friend. For some reason, even though I've never been to Africa, I think I am intrigued by Ethiopia. From Mt. Nyala high in the mountains, to Greater and Lesser Kudu, Besia Oryx, Thompson's and Grant's Gazelles, Abysinnian and Menelik's Bushbuck, and so on...

Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and the countries of CAR and Congo all fuel a desire to hunt the game within their borders. Especially the spiral horns.

I'd love to see the Selous and the Okavango.

I'm not sure I'd choose a Bongo hunt as the final safari, given the conditions they are hunted. I would think a final safari would be something I could hunt a few members of the Big Five and general plainsgame. Guess I'd like a full bag safari in the Selous or in Kenya, in good weather with good friends to share it with.

In Borneo (Sarawak) in Malaysia I was looking for a
babirusa and I found this weird pig.
This pig is absolutely non descripted.
An enigma.

It seems to smoke a cigar.
Has somebody a clue?????????????????????

larcher,

That nasty looking thing might be a young Sumatran Rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) with the horn removed to keep it from becoming an Asian aphrodisiac.

to bad I didn't discover it was a Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, I would have flatten it.
But how ? with a camcorder, kicking it with my bare feet or strangling it with my Bermuda shorts' belt?

What nasty thoughts is this your last safari and planning it.

To play along seeing that I hope that I will have a very long hunting career still ahead and never hunted elephant before but have read many about hunting them and would love to hunt them. I would say 5 old elephant bulls. Which means that if I would hunt them in Botswana I would have to spend 21 x 5 days for my last safari. Now that would be a great last safari or what would you guys think ???
