Spanish double rifle in 7X65R
      #359600 - 23/12/21 08:10 PM

SOLD. Thread maintained for interest.

Spanish double rifle in 7X65R. I can't find a maker's name on it but the English auction house that sold it to me said that it was by Ego Armas. 24.75" barrel, striker disc, LOP 14 5/8". drop at comb is 1.5" and at heel is 2.5", (hard to measure with the quarter rib and peep sight), 8.6lbs. I have dies and 3 boxes of ammo but ammo cannot be shipped out of Alaska. Also listed on gunbroker, if it gets a bid there first I will remove from here. Shipping via USPS is usually around $75. Registered is more secure but takes quite a bit longer to arrive. UPS is difficult in Alaska. VISA and MC accepted but buyer pays the 3% fee. $3500 Paypal accepted but again buyer pays the fees. SOLD.

It's a decent caliber for up here and I do like the peep sight. A bit too nice for the Alaskan weather.

Hello Daryl_S, NitroX, 93x64mm,

This will be my first Spanish DR. I look forward to giving it a review on the Double Rifle Forum when I get it in hand.

Gentlemen, I am shifting this thread to the DR forum. I've not redone the images yet, as I still don't have a working laptop.

I'm keen to see how the rifle shoots.

Good price.

Will make a nice medium game hunting rifle.

Hello NitroX,

I want to give a "good guy" shout-out to casper50 - he's a great guy! This is a wonderful double rifle. Its got a lot of whistles and bells - Ejectors, Bushed Firing Pins, and a Hinged Front Trigger. I will be loading and testing next week. Results will be posted here.

As many know, I sold a lot of iron to purchase the hunting land that I had been leasing for 47 years. Those sales included 11 double rifles from my collection. I'm kind of starting over with this one. I'm anxious to see how it performs. In the meantime, every good gun deserves a good case. Here's the one I customized for this rifle.

I couldn't wait till next week, so I went to the range today. It was a splendid 14 degrees. casper50 was kind enough to include a set of reloading dies, 60 pcs of new brass, and snap caps. He actually had 3 boxes of factory ammo, but loaded ammo can't be shipped from Alaska because all shipping services from there are via AIR, which doesn't allow loaded ammo. However, he pulled the bullets, dumped the powder, and de-primed the brass for me. With bullets and brass in hand, I started load development. The rifle has a great peep-site that worked great with my 70 year old eyes. I always start conservative - the results below look very promising.

I've also shown below some high-resolution pictures from the original Holt's auction listing in 2019.

The peep sight looks very useful.

Those groups are crossing. Usable at shorter ranges. What are your plans to see if they can be non crossed? 2500 for for a 170 be is already quite fast?

Hello NitroX,
Thanks for the reply.

I have a couple of doubles that have loads like these that cross slightly at 50 yds. A 2" crossing group at 50 yds results in 4" groups at 100 yds, which in most cases is acceptable for typical DR hunting. However, I do intend to try a few loads to see if I can accomplish "muzzle distance apart" non-crossed groups. Next test with 175gr bullets might do better. I also plan on trying some RL powders which I believe are used by Norma in their Factory ammo.

Best wishes, buckstix, with the regulation loads.
The results with the 175's will be interesting and show if perhaps 160's might be the way to go.
It is very close, though.

Beautiful rifle!

I've reloaded the 7x65R Brenneke for many years, mostly for my Merkel single shot rifle, but also for a Sauer & Sohn o/u double rifle I had for some years.

I know some manufacturers regulated their double rifles in 7x65R for light 150 gr bullets, but I do prefer the heavy for caliber bullets for this cartridge - especially the 175 grains.
The norma 170 grains (oryx and vulcan) are somewhat odd, as most manufacturers have 160 or 175 grains 7 mm bullets.

I bet that a 175 grains bullet might be a good choice to try out. I reload the 175 grain partition to about 2460 fps with 52 grains norma MRP although it might be pushed a bit more, I see no point since it's very effective.
The norma 170 grains oryx could be reloaded to about 2600 fps with MRP without exceeding the CIP max pressure.

As for the 175 gr partition, I've also had very good results with the 175 gr woodleigh pp, both these bullets will probably perform best with 50-53 grains Norma MRP (got these non published data from a person from Norma), so I do recommend that powder or Alliant Reloder 22, which is listed as being manufactured from the same Eurenco Bofors reference powder.

Feel free to contact me if you would like to have published data of the 7x65R, I have a lot of it.

As for the 175 gr partition,

I would be careful using a bullet with a solid shank like a partition or a monometal bullet without raised bands in a double 4ifle.

Yes, that's right - forgot to mention that I reload the partition only for my single shot, better to stick with the woodleigh in a double.

7x65R is a very nice cartridge

Hello All,
Thanks for the reply.

I'll be working up loads this Spring ... I'm thinking bullets in the 150g - 160g will be my choice for hunting.
