He's very lucky to have made it to a hospital.

Thank you for posting this link, Ripp.
The hunter is still in hospital - I think, but his life is apparently not endangered.
Bears are fully protected in France and re-introducing bears - coming from Slovenia, was decided some years ago by the Paris politicians, most probably with aim to secure the Greens' votes; local communities in the Pyrenees were mostly against.
Bears have proved to be a nuisance, causing much trouble to farmers, mainly when cattle (sheep, cows and horses) are left roaming the mountain pastures in summer and also more recently to hikers, who have reported some tense encounters; such an incident had been expected for some time now. The last time a hunter shot a bear in a self-defence situation was in 2004.
Same issue with wolves, not attacking people yet but impacting negatively on the farming community; also fully protected in France.
Louis

the situation of this mountains make them a second niflheim, a world behind clouds and fog.
woodland looks like jungle sometimes.

the reasons for the bear problem are allways the same in europe: sheeps , cattle ,horses and greens who make rules where the bear is untouchable

if the bear take sheeps he brings himself into a situation where bullets will fly
and I believe the bear see this as a part of this game and agree it happen than. its an old game played between man and bear for thousands of years. not shooting back confuse the bear and he don't understand what happen, imho.

Same here only a lot more bears.. Griz --in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho..

Have not been hunted in so long in the lower 48, Griz have forgot to be afraid of humans.. so.... that creates an interesting situation between ranchers and bears also between tourists and bears..

Also same if bears get into livestock.. bullets will fly as you say..

Sounds a bit like the hunter's name may have been Kyle R.

In the rural areas here when it comes to troublesome bears or wolves, the 3 S's apply..
Shoot
Shovel
Shut up..

There is a new moratorium on shooting grizzlies here in BC. This came at a time when there was little hunting of them each year and their numbers were multiplying rapidly all over the Province.
We expect a LOT more bear/hiker/camper problems, not to mention the normal problems of rifle shots during hunting season being the dinner bell for griz. in the area. They don't care if it's an elk, moose, deer or black bear. Those are all grizzly food.

California is the "Bear" state, and was known for the large population of the bruins a couple centuries ago but were slaughtered by first the Spanish invaders and later the "49'er" invaders. I have long been an advocate of re-populating them back to their traditional range. Thereby righting an egregious wrong. It is also my understanding that their original range included the coastal areas. Like San Francisco was a hot bed. Take that Nancy P.

From the article:
“He’s (The Boss) the most dominant male grizzly bear in the Bow Valley… And there’s NOTHING else in the food chain that could push him off.” well...let me see...if you exclude a well placed piece of fast moving lead.

When I read the headline I thought it was Sweden.

In Sweden the authorities are very protective in regards to bears and wolves. Killing one of these two animals starts a full murder investigation by the police even though the person who did the killing was mauled to porkchops or a buddy had to shoot to save his friend.

Love to go to France one day. I know from many its such a pretty country, nice people and always good eating with good wine. Whats not to like??…
