Barrel band for CZ550??
      #35827 - 14/08/05 03:44 PM

I am purchasing a CZ550 American Safari magnum in .416 Rigby. I am going to have some work done to it by a gun smith before I take possesion of the rifle. One of the things I wanted done was a barrel band placed on the rifle for a sling swivil. Has anyone done this to their rifle (CZ550).

Can a band be placed on the barrell without to much stuffing around ie. sweating off the front sight etc

any ideas???

cheers

If it is a rifle you're having brought from the USA and it has not been ordered yet, CZ-USA has a custom shop where they will do barrel band swivels, glass bedding, upgraded wood, etc, before shipping the gun.

Check Safari Classics by CZ-USA

The front sight has to come off, but it's a relatively simple process for a good gunsmith.

Thanks,
The gun is expected within the month. Hoping to get the stock bedded, a cross bolt (to reduce any chance of the stock cracking) and get the barrel band done by the gunsmith before I collect the rifle. Seems easier to get a gunsmith here to do the work.

cheers

Have him work on the feeding before you take delivery also.

I've yet to run into a CZ/BRNO that fed as well from the factory as they have the potential to.

You could always have a straddle type band that only covers the bottom half the barrel and have it sweated on with a cornish tin solder, this way other than for a reblue, the front foresight band can remain in place, thus minimising further exposure to heat of the barrel.

Holland and Holland often did this on their magazine rifles especially where the barrel was too large a diameter for their standard banded swivels.

Whatever mods you make, make sure they include a second recoil lug on the barrel and glass bedding to this and the action lug. Supplement this also with two steel cross bolts and if possible relieve a small area of wood to the rear of the action tang, say about .020", this will allow an expansion slot for the rear tang on firing and prevent splits from setting up when the tang drives back.

The latter happens when the wood to the side of the magazine box accordions on firing, if there is a space to cater for this, the tang cannot drive into the recess.

If you just want a bb swivel, that's great but they are just a waste of money. They are not needed because of recoil. They just look cool.

A Barrel band may be just for looks for some, however, after hunting and shooting huge amounts of rounds though a rifle with barrel band fitted (I had an early BRNO .458 wm with barrel band), I must say, a sling swivel screwed into the forend is a pain in the arse and I just don't like them.

I enjoy my shooting and I like to shoot a rifle that is set up for me the way I like it.

It comes down to personal likes and dislikes.

But thanks for the input, from everyone.

Cheers
