If one was to use it primarily with open sights, the hog-back could be cut straight and likely still give a comfortable cheek-weld for fast off-hand shooting.
Its a .45-70 after all, not a Creedmore!

Similarly, the Euro cheek-piece could be re-contoured to a small pancake. Several guys in my circle have done this with the CZ bolt-rifles and they look heaps better.

Apart from what degoins said about the O/U configuration, my main concern is the aluminium action, lightening the rifle at the exact place that weight needs to be concentrated to make the firearm a fast and responsive "lively" rifle for offhand work. I simply can't understand why makers of modern doubles just don't get this!!
Have they never even picked up a vintage British nitro double?

The CZ/BRNO cheek style never bothered me - in 1973 with the ZKK, nor the M527's in the 2000's. I shot that .358 NM with the open sights just fine.
This .45/70 sure had a nice chuck of wood on it.

My 45-70 DR has nice wood too:

Of course the wood is custom, but the action is Beretta.

I shot a Heym U/O at the Heym International Challenge in 9.3x62 I think it was. Or a .30-06?

Two shots at two balloons with a time limit of X seconds.

My rifle doubled, one bang. A single trigger rifle. Embarassing for them. It was examined and defective. Someone ran and got a different rifle. Shot the second half of the target very easily.

The Heym U/O DR was only $3500 at the time. Very affordable. Plainer wood than the rifle above. Only a single trigger. A 9.3x62 like that if reliable would be a nice brush medium game rifle.

It’s not my taste but a lot of people might be able to afford this gun that could never afford a traditional
“English Double”.

" “We regulate our .45-70s with the 325-grain Hornady LeveRevolution ammo; it gives a bit of flexibility to the package,”"

I have read this load is pretty much strictly a deer load and is not suitable for moose and elk, let alone the big bears. This is due THEY say, to too-rapid expansion of the bullet.

The above mentioned 325 Hornady bullet is not to my liking -- same for the over under configuration.

In either my 9.5 pound 1886 .458 2.4 or my 8.5 pound .458 2.1 DR that Hornady cartridge is not pleasant to shoot. The feel reminds me of shooting .458 300 grain handloads at 2600 fps, just an unpleasant load.
Even our African ele loads of 450 grain North Fork solids at 2150 fps are more pleasant to shoot.

I have a 20 round box to trade for something I do like, say Winchester Gold .458 Nosler PP with which I have had very good luck and which also took a leopard for our bullet testing team.

If I was going to get a DR in 45-70 I'd like to have it regulated for a traditional 350 grain bullet, eg hornady RN interlock, north fork or woodleigh. The 325 gr leverevolution isn't that flexible at all in my opinion. Don't know what pressures a modern o/u heym could take, but my own 350 gr loads for the marlin 1895G are close to 40000 psi - perhaps the heym would fix that too?

On the other hand- i think the good old 45-70 is best suited in a side by side rifle. If I was to buy a heym 26B I'd rather choose one of the fine 7, 8 or 9,3 mm cartridges.

Noiden,
Good choice of bullets-- both Make and type. My Beretta sxs DR 45-70 will soon become a 45-90 and be re-regulated with North Fork 350 Grain SS bullets.
I have hand loaded all the test ammo and plan to drop off the rifle and ammo with an area gunmaker this weekend. If all goes well, I will soon post on the results.
