Hey John, did the holster arrive? I mailed it some weeks ago.

Curl knows it arrived. I thought I'd mention it on here. Years later! And the handgun just fits. Thanks.

You are very welcome, my friend!

I hope you have gotten the 1911 you wanted.

Curl, your US Army holster I'm reserving for the Apocalypse. But it's still the only holster I own for it. Still need to get a IPSC holsterless quick draw holster. Has to be ordered interstate. I can't afford the ammo use requirements of IPSC as we still can't buy handgun powder. Years and years unavailable now.

I have been shooting black powder more in recent months. Which also gives me the .45 handgun licence category.

On a positive note, through my military shooting club, I can get a .45 competition use. So a .45 ACP 1911 will one day be in my hands. Silhouette, steel action etc. I'd like one with a ten shot magazine though. Possible?

I had a good go with my .38 Super Trojan and .44 1860 Colt a few days ago, end of February.

I do need to get some magazines holders for my belt though.

When I had a 1911 in .45, I had a few 11 round mags, but they sure stick down a long way below the butt.
Normal today, is 8 in a standard mag, no longer 7 although I suppose those are still available.

Hope you guys don't mind a plug for a random supplier, I have no affiliations, but Digger Tactical have a few Wilson Combat 10-round mags for the 1911 Colt .45, advertised on one on the internet gun-sale sites. Reasonable price considering the make, and easy to deal with.

They have one less in stock since my phone call yesterday!

My .45 barrel and bushing(s) were Wilson Combat. The links too, iirc. 2" at 50yds. was the best I could do. They had advertised 1 1/2" from a Ransom rest.

What I meant was: nothing stopping you getting a magazine now while they are available, given these uncertain times. Sadly, future imports of handgun parts like this from the US is no guarantee...

If buying a magazine in anticipation of owning the gun is a problem in your jurisdiction, apologies.

Yes I agree. I'm just wondering how many to get. One, two, three? More? Subject to my non existent funds.

How many magazines would normally be used in an IPSC competition, needing preloading?

What would because decent 1911 .45 to buy?

I assume these mags are for the original Colt 1911 .45 ACP. i.e. a modern copy.

Is there any reason not to get an original modern version, or a newer 1911 type handgun? Brand?

Marrakai, what do have? An original?

I guess we're off topic regarding the .38 Super, and this will probably be more info than you bargained for John, but where .45s are concerned, the 1911 platform is the recommended option amongst my friends who shoot IPSC and similar disciplines.

STI is probably the most recommended for starters, Canadian Paras properly worked are popular, and Colts of course, Mk.IV Series 70 being preferred over the Series 80 and later but not many remain unmolested. Monicas like "Gold Cup National Match' etc do have meaning apparently.

Bul Armoury also has a following, I spent a day with the importer in Brizzy many years ago, interesting man...
If you have thousands to spend, there are specialist variants by custom pistolsmiths of course that will make your eyes water!

This info is from my (very!) limited experience compared with serious competitive shooters, and is common knowledge I assume.

Personally I shoot .45s in the Australia Day, Bombing of Darwin, Anzac Day and Remembrance Day commemorative shoots with a 1914 original Argie contract Colt, or a CFS Sistema Colt, when not using my Mk.VI Webley revolver. Permits to discharge collector firearms are tightening up unfortunately. Those commemorative shoots are 10-round series, and I have been at a disadvantage shooting two strings of five in the rapid-fire sequences! ...hence the 10-round mag purchase.

My main competitive (term used loosely!) combat-style handgun for falling plates etc at my club is a Mk.IV Series 70 in .38-45 JWH, but I don't shoot it as much as I'd like atm. It's handloads-only of course, so primer and powder shortages have been a factor.

I am assuming the 10-round Wilson Combat mag will feed the .38-45 equally as well as the .45 ACP.

Are magazines interchangeable among different .45 ACP 1911s?

I had only one Colt mag. + 5 or 6 others
They all worked perfectly.
IIRC I did a light polish on the barrel's feed ramp. It didn't need much and would feed even .45 Colt 250gr. SWC from an RCBS mould.

Colt magazines and their equivalents (i.e. military surplus magazines) will be interchangeable in any mil-spec 1911 or 1911A1.

That covers a broad range of pistols and magazines. However; this day and time, there are so many new manufacturers and custom suppliers that it is anybody's guess what will interchange. I would hope that an inquiry to the specific maker would result in a straight answer as to whether a standard Colt magazine will work.

As for competitive disciplines using the 1911 platform, I have no information. All my shooting with those pistols has been informal plinking. I used to be a fairly good shot, but lack of practice in recent years has left me lacking. At age 71 I am not as strong as I was at 40!

John:
Just a thought: we are talking single-stack mags for the Colt Govt .45 here that are generally interchangeable.
Many modern 1911-platform .45s are double-stack, and may be specific to the firearm make.
Personally I don't like the fatter grip that requires.

Very enviable gun cabinet there, Curl!
