A question. As there is a ten round magazine model, can the larger capacity magazines also be used in this model? I was told, yes.

15 to 17 rounds.is just the magazine different? Or the feeding? And magazine well/housing?

I started off with a 1911 in .38 Super. I've shot HiPowers but they were not in the same class.
Bushings for barrel fit, links to change engagement fit, so changeable, is the 1911.
Should never have sold mine.

Is a Browning HiPower a 1911 style handgun? If I remember when handling one once they looked a little like one? Fair amount of time ago.

I used a club STI Trojan in 9 mm and liked it a lot. And it felt right. Discontinued model. Simple but works.

Have five magazines for it.

Second hand but near new. The springs are very tight. Good.

It needs new sights. Maybe a fibre optic dot on the front sight and a couple flanking painted dots on the rear. I find the existing sight harder to see quickly to shoot well quickly. I won't use a dot sight on this handgun. Keep it basic.

Have 300 loaded cartridges for it. Should get some more.

A fair number of projectiles and primers and maybe brass (?). No powder. Unobtainable at present. Need dies and a press still.

Need will be a 9 mm sometime when the wallet allows. I do quite like the steel frame Walther Q5. A completely different style of handgun. The two stage trigger ismnot sure about.

But a SIG P226 (?) double Action 9 mm would possibly be preferable. Sillily did not buy a second hand one at good price when available. I think they went quickly. Only one magazine. Additional mags could cost a lot if findable.

I shot one of the ERT's new Sig. 226's when they were issued to that section.

Rapid fire on about an 8" plate at 50 meters, hit every shot - seems to me, it held 15rnds.

I was shooting a lot at that time and it was a breeze. I really liked that pistol. Would have been better if a .45, of course.

ERT - RCMP Emergency Response Team

Funny - I can NOT see that "scenario" happening today.

IIRC - it was DA for the first shot, then SA.

STI Trojan 38 Super handgun - holsters & accessories? [Re: DarylS]
      #361337 - 30/01/22 07:43 PM

I have 5 mags, the owners manual, plastic lockable carrying case. Some cleaning kit stuff.

I would like recommendations for:

1. Suitable belt holsters. Leather or synthetic, flapped of not. And why? I will need some sort of quick draw holster for IPSC.

2. Similar carriers for the spare magazines.

3. Recommendations for a compact handgun cleaning kit in its own compact case or bag - pouch.

4. Anything else recommended?

5. Impossible to get, but which powders would you recommend and loads for a .38 Super? Also velocity of your loads so I can check.

6. Recommendations for a good affordable progressive press, reloading press.

Thanks.

Seeing it is a traditional 1911 looking handgun I do like the idea of a traditional leather flap closing holster.

Of course I might have a synthetic holster for competition use.

Saw your post on this elsewhere..congrats on the acquisition ...

I use Blade Tech for quicker drawing..training ..etc... NO safety latch or anything like that to make for a smooth quick draw..
https://blade-tech.com/products/classic-owb-holster

I prefer leather when carrying for personal protection..And normally what I used for CC..But too be honest..many of my IWB are synthetic .. The option of leather when I am out on the ranch is nice..but dont like it when out on a ride checking cattle and getting caught in a rain storm.. like synthetic or other than leather in that instance..

MY good friend uses a Dillon progressive loader.. he really likes it.. I dont have a progressive.. before the ammo shortage I had a deal and got it quite cheap for factory ammo..so I purchased it by the truck load.. currently don't have the time to sit for hours reloading.. Have cattle to tend to..

I no longer have my data for the .38 Super from my 1911. Gone!
I just checked the Hodgon's Annual Manual and none of the data in there was familiar. Seems to me I used Unique and Herco for powders.
Checking an old manual I'd have used, the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook of the 70's I see 150gr. cast using 5.7gr. Unique for 1,110fps as well as 6.0gr. with 133gr. bullet for 1,200fps.

John,

Congratulations on your Super .38 acquisition! That's a great cartridge on the 1911 platform. I have several.

If you will send my your postal mailing address by PM or email, I will send you a nice reproduction GI flap holster.

This is no quick-draw, but it probably is just what you need. It's a little dry, but a rub with leather conditioner, inside and out, will bring it to life.

My gift to you, mate.

Cheers,
Roscoe

Thanks. Useful. If pistol powders are ever imported again? Rifle and shotgun powders are made here. Indeed exported to the USA

Dankeschoern Mein Kapitan! Thanks, it will come in useful.

A .45 ACP Colt 1911 would even be better in it! Alas however our .38 general handgun limit designed to keep unruly natives peaceful. Can't have those Moro local savages getting their hands on .45s.

I have a man bag with a pocket at the back.i have wondered if a handgun would fit in the back pocket? The STI Trojan is not small. Yes it does! Obviously only useful in more carry enlightened lands than Australia.

My manbag is British karki, a mil style smallish bag with bottle holder, knife pouch, several zipped pockets. A shoulder strap and a belt loop as well. Excellent for travelling or strolling the shops in town!

Thanks again for the gift of the leather holster emblazoned with the US!

Hello John,

that is a fine pistol, congratulation!

recommendations :

Holster
Sickinger in Austria has good products in leather, I would look for a model with a covered trigger guard (prevents pulling the trigger during draw and prevents holes in the trouser :-)

For IPSC I would use a Kydex holster. These are rugged, have a good fit to the weapon, the resistance for draw can be adjusted and they are reasonable priced. For IPSC it is mandatory that the trigger area is guarded.

Ammunition:
I would stay away from lead bullets in indoor ranges because of the high bullet velocities and the smoke/fog/fumes generated. As a former IPSC range officer I hated especially the guys with 38 Super guns and lead bullets ...

The copper plated lead bullets work good, have acceptable accuracy and are not as expensive as jacketed bullets

Reloading press:
The Dillon 550 (4 station progressive press) is a very good press for medium volume loading and not as complicated to adjust if you have a stoppage (Berdan case, wrong case, ...) like the Dillon 650.
Also less expensive.

best reards
Rolf

Years ago, I used a Dillon 450. Nice press, but not as automated as my bro's 650 or the 550.
I used to load about 300 .45ACP per hour on it.
The longer cases, like the .38 spl and .357mag were slower.
They really work well with shorter cases and the .38 Super should work just fine.

I have been feeding both my 38 supers 3.9 of WST with a 125 gr RN and they both work fine, almost no recoil and very accurate.

Curl, btw I am keen one day to get a Colt 1911 .45 ACP.

Possibly impossible due to the law. Once allegedly the most popular handgun in Australia. Since 2003 gone.

I know IPSC is not an acceptable justification here.

Larger than .38 IS a justification for knocking down metal silhouettes, so I will try that. Another club to join.

That holster will be perfect for my future 1911 .45 ACP! . Here's hoping.
