White Tiger pictures

I was surprised to see that MSN had a recommended feature for searching for images for White Tigers - no hunting, of course, but a superb collefctions of pictures of what I believe is the world's most magnificent animal.

White tigers are gorgeous but don't they seem to have some genetic flaws that show up if someone tries to deliberately breed them? I recall reading that one of the prize specimens in the National Zoo, or someplace, had to be euthanized because it had become so crippled from inherited defects. White housecats with blue eyes are invariably deaf.

Oldsarge,

You are absolutely right about white tigers having a genetic defect - albinism - which maks them white. But they are not crippled in any other way probably because the Maharajas of Rewa who bred them always took care to cross them with normal tigers. Every litter would have some white and some normal tigers. After the Indian kingdoms and Privy Purses and Previleges were abolished the whole process of breeding these beautiful animals was taken over by the Indian government and several zoos in India breed them.
