Azhur shotguns anyone?
      #355212 - 16/07/21 06:19 PM

I am looking for information on Azhur shotguns, or the Azhur gunmaker? Who were they or are they? What did they make? Any examples?

NOW I do have an Azhur shotgun myself! It is a nicely engraved detachable sidelock side by side.

I purchased it pre-owned from Charles Hunter Firearms in Adelaide. They imported two lots of these shotguns from Spain, twenty in total. Back in 1983 I think it was. One of the buyers resold his back soon after delivery as he wanted to purchase a handgun instead. So mine was pre-owned but barely.

I will post some photos of it. From a pheasant shoot. Also I have some possibly not very good photos taken for a police registration self audit. Lighting is not good in them. I need to retake some for display on the internet.

Now I know it is an Azhur because I purchased it from the importer. BUT the onlybrand marking I think is the AZ on two places on the shotgun.

I am interested in knowing more about the brand. They seem to be a bit like AyAs. Perhaps the Azhur brand was a buyers own rebrand type of shotgun. Especially seeing the complete lack of naming or branding? Perhaps purposefully that way, so a buyers own brand, coudl rebrand them with their own name. I should brand mine as a "John Hahn Gunmakers Fine Guns" shotgun.

PS Mine does have some usage marks. The barrels have runned a little in bags etc and from field use.

I used to use it a lot, but find the buttstock is now a little short! Never used to be.

Two nice sidelocks. My Azhur is the twin trigger detachable sidelock on the right.

Photos taken for a police registration self audit. Lighting not ideal. I may take new photos at some later time.

Those are really nice looking and seemingly well built, high quality shotguns. I've never heard of them, before, but then there are a lot of gun makes I've not heard of.

I'm like Daryl, I haven't heard of them before.
The only Spanish built guns I know are the AYA's & Laurona's of which I have one given to me many years ago by a cousin getting out of his firearms.
It is a boxlock SxS of unknown model type & definitely not in the same league as your beauty mate, it has a lot of wear & tear now but can still take a duck to two when it has to.
Sorry I can't help further

There must be twenty of these in Australia or SA, having come in in the 1980's.

In the National Firearms Database there is an Azhur Filed Shotgun. However it might be different as the self audit page said mine was not consistent with the NFD description and I needed to add photographs to the submission.

As said Azhur is no where on the firearm, just two AZ's in a square box, on the barrel bottom and the action.

I need to take some photos of it now. I took off the sidelocks, to see if any marks were underneath. Now can't get the bloody things back on!!!!! So while off, give it a good oil and clean, and some photos. Then some pressure to get the backs of the sidelocks in further might be needed.

They slide in with a ridge at the front. The backs still sit out some mm's and won't go in further.

Thanks for the replies. Need a Spanish expert. Will try farcebook!

The "silver" knob and screw on my sidelock which tightens the two sideplates, is a custom one. The original was blue black. Somehow it unwound when shooting one day. And I searched back everwhere I had walked but being small, large luck required to find it again. Kevin in Melbourne mad me a new one.

A question for out experts. The negraving on my plates has become a little subdued. I used some grease ont he hinge pin, and it was for my BP guns, and it encouraged rust!!! Poliching the plates with oil removed some surface colour of red. Is there something one can rub on the plates to bring back the lustre and shine without dmagaing the engraving?

It isn't that noticeable but remembering what they were like previously I know the difference. It isn't pitting or anything like that.

Afaik “Azhur” is/was a trademark of Zabala Hermanos´( Zabala brothers) in Elgueta near Eibar, Spain. I don’t know if they are still in business, but they were in 2008.

AZHUR ARMAS, S.A. is who made the SxS.

They were formerly named ASCENCIO ZABALA.
So it could have been mfg'd when they were under the latter name yet as it is marked with the AZ stamping.

I don;t know when the name change came about.

'Ascensio Zabala' was NOT the same company as 'Zabala Hermanos (Bros)'

Added,,
If you want to bring back a little shine to the plates w/o blurring the engraving, go over them with a plain eraser. The 'pink' erasers, we used to call them a desk eraser as opposed to the eraser on the back end of a common pencil.
The eraser on a pencil is generally much coarser and can scratch. A block eraser which if you go to a stationery store to buy one,,will usually come in 3 or 4 different grades of coarseness. Medium or Fine is good to work with.
It's just abrasive enough to clear any oxidation but won't cut any metal from the surface.
It'll shine up inlays as well but don't over do it on soft metal inlay work.

I need to create a case label for this shotgun.

Azhur

AZHUR ARMAS, S.A..

They were formerly named ASCENCIO ZABALA.

Azhur may mean bright. If the word relates to Ashar.

"Azhar"
Shining, Luminous, Brilliant
Meaning. Shining, Luminous, Brilliant. Region of origin. Arabia.

I've always assumed Azhur related to Azure, Blue. Maybe a Blue-Silver.

I think a bright silvery star might make a nice Azhur case label symbol. The words, Azhur. AZHUR ARMAS, S.A.. ASCENCIO ZABALA.

What was the Spanish address of Ascencio Zabala?

Some star possibilities.

I prefer this design shape. In terms of a case label, if the star is centred in the writing, the above star fits better. If to the side, say left, the bottom star shape works.

Maybe a blue and silver star like the paper model? Argento and Azure. The same as the heraldic Hahn Family colours.
