I have inherited my grandfather model 98. It's a spoterized military action done all at Mauser best i can tell. The scope and every part of this weapon are honest and original. Can anyone help with nailing down the history of when exactly it was done at Mauser?

Without photos, your description is not enough to know just what Mauser you have. If you PM me your email address I can send you a PDF of Jon Speeds article "Original Oberndorf Mauser Variations". The article has serial numbers and year of manufacture of the sporters and photos of several of the different M98 sporters produced by Mauser. This may give you the info you are looking for.

This is not a sporterised military Mauser action, but a genuine commercial Mauser sporter made in 1940, according to the serial number and the proofmarks. Somewhere on the barrel there must be the proofdate given as something like 7 40 for July 1940. It is built on an intermediate length action like the famous .275 Rigby rifles. The photos don’t show the foreend, so it may either be a half-stocked model B or a full stocked model S Stutzen. The Zeiss Zielvier scope was mounted with Suhl type claw mounts by the retailing gunsmith, not by the Mauser factory. A nice collectible as well as useable commercial Mauser rifle. You are lucky as it retains it's original scope.

I'm not sure if this matters but something doesn't seem quite right. In the second photo the serial number 123181 appears on the barrel, whereas 143181 is on the receiver just below the scope mount.
Would the Mauser factory make a mistake like that on a commercial action?

IMHO the number on the receiver ring is more likely a mis-struck 2 than a 4.
ie not mismatched at all.
Nice rifle chambered for a great cartridge!

Did so before posting. BTW, a 143xxx Mauser commercial serial number is impossible. Even Walter Röll, who continued the making and numbering post-WW2, got to number 128141 in 1960 at the very end of his gunmaking.

If you blow up picture #1 there is a hint of a schnabel forend so a model B.

Thanks for all the info the action DOES have the "notch" for a stripper clip that made me think military. She is 100% honest every number matches all the way through stock included.

Thank you so much for the help sir I appreciate it I will share all this info with my father. He is in poor health and this rifle has been a family heirloom. It was brought back by my Great Uncle in the war and has been in our family ever since. It will mean a lot to my father to know it's history.
