help with rifle choice (375 H&H or weatherby)

I am trying to plan on my next rifle. I currently have a marlin 45-70 and a rem 700 270win. I want my next rifle to be either a 375 H&H or weatherby. I am looking on advise as to what an accurate good rifle in this caliber might be. I will probably never go to africa, so absolute reliability is not the main concern although that would be a plus. my criteria is it can not cost more than $1000 preferably the $800 range, and I want a decent shooting rifle for the cost in bolt action. Here is a list of what I have found so far:
Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker ($799.92)
Browning A-Bolt Medalion ($699.94)
Remington 700 XCR ($893)
Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless ($719.94)
CZ 550 Safari Mag ($833)
Weatherby MRK V Synthetic ($1116)
Charles Daly Mauser ($700)

If anyone has any experience with any of the listed rifles or any suggestions for rifles, please let me know.

I had a remington 700 classic in 375 H&H and couldn't get it to go to my satisfaction. I traded it off!

Two of my friends, and I, all have Model 70 Classic Stainless in .375 H&H. They all shoot Remington Safari Ammo, with the 300 grain Swift A-Frame under 1 inch at 100 yards. We all spray painted the barrels with flat black engine paint to dull the finish.

Frst off, does this rifle have to be new, or can it be a used rifle? This will make a big difference in what you have to choose from!

I personally would not pick any of the rifles you have listed, even if like you say you never intend to go to Africa. Even with Africa out of the equation, I would assume that dangerious game is on he menue since you want a 375 H&H. If any kind of dangerious game will be involved, a rifle with CRF (controlled round feed) is essential, period.. Also, since a 375 is a danerious game rifle, I would not rule out Africa or any other place, as you never know what you might do in the future. So why not purchase a rifle from the start that is apporiate to begin with?

My suggestion would be a top qulity used Mauser. Since you have a price range of $1000.00 or less, a good used Mauser is defenately possible. My personal pick would be a used Brno ZKK 602 in 375 H&H. I only hunt and shoot Brno ZKK rifles as I believe they are the best Mauser ever made for the money and the Brno ZKK 602 is a true magnum mauser action. Unlike a standard length mauser, one does not have to open up the action or take metal out so the the cartridge will feed properly. I have never liked taking metal out of a action, it has been done for years, but I feel it weakens the action. The Brno's also have groved recievers for scope mounting, which eleminates the need for bases, one less thing to attach and work loose.

I would also choose the 375 H&H over a Weatherby as the H&H is a tried and true caliber, ammo is available everywhere and has far less recoil. No matter where you travel for big game hunting, you will find 375 H&H ammo. The H&H is also in the price range you have stated. Another thing to consider is that if you ever decide to get rid of a 375 H&H built on a mauser action, it would not be difficult, this is not true with the weatherby or a 375 with a push feed action.

I thought I was the only person who did that...I used flat black high heat spray paint from Krylon, I think the paint was designed for use on barbeque pits.

MauserRifle has it pegged - go with a Mauser actioned .375H&H - absolutley the best idea - It also must feed slam-fed as well as up from the magazine. If the rifle doens't do this, the extractor can be re-ground and polished to allow slam-feeding. (throwing a round onto the follower and chambering it)
: The ZKK602 BRNO is the ultimate big Mauser action, today, bar none. IMHO, of course. Mine held 235 thorugh 350gr. in a 2 1/2" circle at 100 meters off the bags. Counting only the 270, 285 and 300gr. bullets, 3 different mfgr's, the overall group was closer to 1 1/8" for all weights. The 350's shot a tiny bit low and the 235's a wee bit higher than the middle weights, doubling the group size.
: With 270gr.WW cast bullets & 23gr. 7625, (no filler) it held 1/2 to 3/4" groups at 100meters. reqiring only a 5MOA vertical sight adjustment for zeroing.

First off, forget the Weatherby. It is the answer to a question that noone asked. The H&H has stood the test of time as the world's most versatile caliber.

I shoot a model 70 classic super express in 375 H&H. It shoots very accurate and has proven to be supremely reliable from Zimbabwe to British Columbia.

I would recomend looking for an early 90's production gun. You should be able to find one for under $1,000.

fisrt off, I hardly ever put post anywhere because I live in germany as an American and basically have no way to own a rifle here. I observe and ask questions to learn as much as I can in preperation for when I get back to the US.
I'm sure no one remembers this post so when it pops up you don't need to respond, but I am responding to the people who responded to my questions.

I think your right on this one but I'm thinking of a 458 Win or Lott for a complimentory higher priced rifle to the 375. I would like a rifle that has average accuracy and functions. I don't care too much about looks. I would like a rifle that shoots well after you feel like a part of the rifle. I am looking for a ruger in 458 Lott for the matching rifle however.
These rifles are more of a passion for me, not a need at all. but if I bought them It would motivate me to use them.

It's kind of like how I wanted a 30-06 instead of a 300 WinMag. the 30-06 is just as good as the 300 mag, it just has a slightly rounder curve in flight and a slightly lower energy that doesn't really matter if you shoot where you are supposed to.

The SAKO 375 H&H is a great rifle at 100 yds shot three round group that was less than one inch with 300 gr bullets.
I know its not on your list but I don't know why.

The CZ550 Safari is basically the same gun as the BRNO 602. I have a CZ550 in .375H&H, and it is a fine gun at an excellent price. Forged-steel receiver, one-piece forged bolt, and hammer-forged barrel. Usable express sights and nice wood stock. It's easy to shoot, and you can get scope rings from CZ that fit the grooves milled into the receiver. Don't bother with a Weatherby.

If you can buy a 375 in a Model 70 "CRF" in stainless for $720...JUMP ON IT!!!! Since Winchester closed, those rifles are selling in the US for $1200-1500!

Definitely go with the H&H.

If you are planning on getting another big bore as a match to this one I would get the same rifle just in a different caliber. That way you can grab either one and they will function the same.

If it were me I would get either the Brno or CZ.

Went to Africa with a push feed .375...and I have not heard anything bad about Remington actions...worked for me...

What do you do when that little fingernail size extractor breaks in the bush? Carry a cleaning rod to extract the spent shell.
