Husqvarna 9.3x62
      #35378 - 03/08/05 04:55 AM

I just picked up a Husqvarna 9.3x62 bolt action. It is my first project rifle. The action and barrel are in great condition but the stock is a throw away. I am have a stock made by Richards Microfit gun stocks and will glass bed the action and float the barrel. What else would anyone suggest I do to it to make it an African Plains Game rifle. It already has a barrel band for a sling. Cross bolts? suggestions on scopes? How does the kick of a 9.3x62 compare to a 375 H&H? Any suggestions at all? Things I should check?

Thanks for you feedback in advance.

Having shot a few 9.3's, I'd have to say that they're softer than a 375. You probably don't need to double bolt the stock but a single bolt forward may be warranted. Ask Atkinson what he'd do with the 9,3 barreled action that he just pick up.

I'd suggest a cross bolt.

Recoil of 9.3 x 62 compared to 375H&H - if not slightly less
all else being equal, very similar - of course alot depends
on the stock, fit to the shooter etc.

Riodot,

Welcome to the forum.

I have exactly what you are talking about - a Husqvarna 9.3x62 bolt action. Mine is on a commercial FN Mauser action and in the original stock, which appears to be birch.

The recoil is certainly more than a .30-06, but it is considerably less than a .375 H&H mag. I think it is very comfortable to shoot, and I don't notice the recoil at all. Mine has the original hard plastic buttplate. No recoil pad. You shouldn't have any problem shooting it.

I don't think you need crossbolts. I have shot mine quite a bit in the original stock with no cracks or problems. Mine is not even glass bedded. All original.

I scoped mine with a 4x Schmidt & Bender in Warne rings and bases. That is plenty magnification for this caliber. I suppose that makes my rifle a bit "upside-down" because the optics are worth more money than the rifle itself!

I also replaced the original military style trigger with a Blackburn trigger. Money well spent there.

These are great rifles. You have a marvelous caliber and a good start on a custom project. I have always thought in the back of my mind that mine would do well with a new stock, but I just haven't dedicated the money to it.

Enjoy your Husky!

Thanks for the Info. If you dn't mind sanding wood, you should look into restocking your husky and getting the syle of stock you like. Richards Microfit is on the web and is the only one I found that inlets a stock for a Husqvarna.

I have send stock blanks I bought to them to have them shaped but their stock wood choices are fine also. It's a great winter project(I've done 2 and have 3 others in line not counting the Husqvarna.) and is not too tough at all.

Mine has a curved, inletted metal butt plate. It is maybe older than yours or just different. I really appreciate the feedback.

I agree with 500nitro. I can shoot my M81 .375 all day but my mate's 9.3 Tikka kicked me all over the shop even on standing shots. All down to the fit, but it SHOULD recoil less than the .375. The huskies are nice rifles!

Let me qualify my statement re recoil.

The 3 I have shot were custom guns made on M98 Actions
and all made light. Combine this with 2 out of the 3 owners
using 286gn bullets as a minimum and at top velocities and
you see why I think the recoil is similar.

In addition, the 2 people also use 320gn Bullets and these
give a much bigger shove !!!

Great calibre, I have a 9.3x72 in a double Merkle and a 9.3x62 in custom mauser by Rex Wolf. The recoil is very tolerable and they took out Buffulo, and all plains game with one shot kills. You'll love the calibre. Good luck

I have a 9.3x62 Blaser R93 I find the recoil with 286grn bullets to be noticeably less than a friends Sako Finnbear .375. I have an S&B 1.25-4 on the rifle which seems to be about right for the short to medium ranges the cartridge is suited.

Another stock option is BoydBoys. The JRS is an excellent desgin for a Mauser action'd rifle. I've several of these stocks and with up to a .375mag ballistics, my laminated stock didn't need cross-bolts.
: The recoil is considerably less than .375. My 9.3X62 comercial 98 Mauser (post war), ran up to 2,518fps with 286gr. Norma RN's. I found BLc2 to be the best powder for it, bar none.
: Presently, I've just built up a .375/06 ICL IMP with .460", 40 degree shoulder, that runs only 100fps behind the H&H. It-too, kicks less than the H&H due to less powder being used. It's capacity is only 2gr. more than the Sako 9.3X62 brass.(80gr. vs 78gr.- fired cases)
: I put a Bushnel Elite 3200 2-7 on my .375, as the rainguard feature is very nice for our wet spring and fall seasons. The scope is more than up to the recoil as they are tested with .375H&H mag & guaranteed against recoil failure). THAT was a deciding factor for me, along with price and excellent quality of my other 3200 Elite.
