Belly Gun front sight suggestions
      #353501 - 17/05/21 11:00 AM

Im looking for some suggestions and I need you guys to think outside the box on this one. I came across a used SAA clone, its a bit of a beater in the looks department but mechanically sound, so Ive decided to turn it into a "Sheriff's Model" of sorts. Im removing the ejector rod and shortening the barrel to about 2 3/4". I might even open up (cut off the front) the trigger guard for something like a Fitz Special.

Once I cut off the barrel, I could just leave it without a front sight or re-use the original; but Im thinking Id like something "special". My first thought was to use half of a 1880-90s coin. Im thinking a Nickel, Dime, or even Penny depending on what I can find thats worn enough to have little value but still be recognized. It doesnt have to be a US coin. NO its NOT illegal.

Im open to other suggestions. I seem to remember hearing one of you guys talk about a double rifle with a diamond set into the front sight. So whatdaya think?

Got any ideas?

Ive seen enough references to "locally made" cut down Colts that I thought it would be a cool project.

Here's your front sight. Make sure the date is visible.

I was thinking a nickle or dime might be a better size - but must be coin silver, whatever you decide.

Daryl are you saying coin silver for a better look? Or is there another reason? Silver (colour) was my first choice.

I’ve read where some didn’t have sights. In most of those articles the authors usually complain that the guns are only accurate at 5-10 feet. When I see that I laugh. It’s a Belly Gun for goodness sake. I’m picturing it only needs to be accurate at 5-10 INCHES and go bang when jammed into flesh

Thanks 9.3. I was looking at Indianhead pennies too. I’ll have to do some twisting and turning to see if I can get the “head” and the date but it’s worth a try.

I was also wondering about things other than coins. Any suggestions

Coin silver is somewhat alloyed and should be stronger than sheet, is all. The dome shape is necessary for pocket removal.
Shrouded or no hammer would be good as well.
As far as instinctive shooting distance goes, my team practiced to 15 yards, and during lunch times, we ran that to 25 yards, just for demonstration purposes.
One of the fellows I worked with some decades ago, fired 5 shots broadside at a fleeing "suspect" car. His gun as a 2" M36? S&W. Not one bullet went through
the hide of the car & no windows hit. He did hit the 60mph car 5 times though, with one bullet hitting the rear tire, went katunk in the wheel well and he walked
out onto the street and picked up the damaged 158gr. RN for a souvenir.

Thanks Brother I figured youd have a good reason about the coins silver.

OTOH theres not much I can do about the hammer since its a SAA.

As for instinctive shooting I agree 100%. On pretty much every incident I had within say room distance, I never saw the the sights or recall ever looking for them. On one particularly amusing incident (at least now it is), I caught myself in the "half hommie", with my gun twisted 45 degrees. Afterwards the suspect said he thought I musta grown up in the hood because of the way I was holding my gun.

A lowered hammer spur, like on "Shif the Gunman's" slip-hammer SAA might be necessary.
