Otto Geyger dates and serial numbers
      #35342 - 02/08/05 12:40 PM

A colleague from another bbs and I are attempting to piece together some sort of history for this company. I have a Geyger SLE 12 gauge which is at least of Purdey quality and became interested in the Marque thru a business parter, Bill Dowtin of Old World Walnut. No records exist for the company, but currently I know of boxlocks(at least 2 matched prs. and a single owned by Bill, my sle no2 of a set, two OU double rifles, one SXS double rifle and two drillings for sale in the world. There may be More. Anyway, what we need are dates serial numbers, descriptions including an estimate of quality, type and kind of engraving. etc. We will publish our findings Regards and thanks for the help-John Dozier. You may reply here or to me at jd803walnut@yahoo.com

Owned an Otto Geyger 8x60RS double rifle. Very much a best grade rifle. Greener safety scalloped boxlock action with Greener crossbolt. Scroll engraving I believe with cased frame. Marked on fences Otto Geyger Berlin. SN 13310
Water table marked with date as I remember sometimes in the late 1920's. Superb rifle both in craftsmanship and accuracy. Both barrels shot 1/2" groups with only about 1" spread. Made special ruger bases to fit in factory claw mounts, worked beautifully. Only problem was with cases which had to be made from 9.3x74R. In fact I wish I had it back but I wish I had back a lot of rifles I once had.

I looked at the rifles on Gunsamerica and there are 2 Geygers an O/U and a SxS. The SxS is not the same action as mine was. Mine had side clips but not the heavy reinforced fences this one has. Mine had a one piece forearm and regular bead front sight. The buttstock was the same even to the bullet trap, checkering, round knob pistol grip and ebony/horn diamond inlays. Mine had the horn buttplate replaced with a Pachmeyer Decellerator.Mine was near mint condition. Wish I still had it as it was a good plains rifle and so very accurate.

John, Why not contact the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. and ask them to help you. I am certain that they could steer you in the right direction to get your questions answered. There were a lot of very small makers that made an excellent product but didn't stay in business very long. I would try them first. In the mean time I will make some inquiries for you and see if I can obtain any information.

John,

Let me suggest that you contact Bob Jones of Ft. Worth, Texas.

Bob has dealt in fine German guns for many years. He has a vast knowledge of the German makers and their output. Bob is a fine gentleman and would be more than happy to share his knowledge. He may even sell you a gun!

I know that he has been gathering data to publish a book on the German makers.

He has a website with contact information:

Bob Jones

You will enjoy making his acquaintence, if you haven't already.

Good luck,
Curl

P.S.

I just browsed his website and saw that he has a really nice Geyger single shot stalking rifle in 9x57R. Wow, what a nice piece!

Double Gun Journal had a Geyger SxS featured a couple of years ago. Don't remember the issue but a very good article. In fact I thought Geygers were fairly common top grade German guns until your post. I see them advertised fairly often. They must have been made at least thru the 20's and 30's as I have seen those date ranges on the water table of 2 I've seen.

The German Gun Collectors' Association might be able to help. Bob Jones advertises on the site if I remember right.

Best wishes,
