Very unusual dangerous game double
      #352318 - 12/04/21 07:55 AM

Westley Richards
You don't see one like this everyday. And from the description, ".....popular chambering for hunting rifles in the 1920s and 1930s and found advocates around the world including the Reverend H.R. Caldwell who shot tigers in China and the famed elephant hunter W.D.M. (Karamojo) Bell who hunted Cape Buffalo in West Africa with this round."

Reverend H.R. Caldwell also used a Savage 99 TD in 22 IMP (22 HP) to kill a tiger. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_Savage_Hi-Power

I guess he liked to live dangerously.

Most people might suggest the .22 HP is a little "light" for tigers, however didn't Corbet also use a Savage 99 in .22 HP on at least one such beast?

There are a flood of combination guns on the Canadian market using 12 and 16 bore along with 5.6x52R chamberings right now
at tradeexcanada.com. These, of course have .228" groove diameters. I bought one, but in .222 Rem.x12 bore.
some makes have the rifle bl. on the bottom, others on the top bl.

I think your right Daryl. In fact Savage used pictures of Caldwell with his Tiger in their advertisements.
I hunted Pronghorns one year with a little 1899 Savage in 22 HP. Shot a nice buck at about 80 yds with open sights. But where I would hunt a Pronghorn with a high power I certainly won't take on a Cape Buffalo with one. Crazy.

There used to be a lot of "Brno"/CZ combination rifles in .22 HP and 12 gauge with the rifle barrel on top, in the adverts of Aussie shooting mags back in the 1980's.

That is a lovely rifle. Would be perfect for roos, hog deer (ir legal), roe deer, feral goats and a lot of feral pigs. Fallow deer, chital as well. With a 70 gr .228 projectyile.

The 70gr. bullet at from 2,800fps to 3,000fps would work fine, I would think - on the stink-goats. That's a long time Montana friend's name for antelope.

I was thinking the same, John.

I think Roy Chapman Andrews killed a polar bear and a tiger with a Savage 99 in 22 HP.

That's an interesting name for prairie goats. I shot quite a few of them in Montana in the Jordan area over the year. Our group was pretty well known at the Hell's Creek Bar.

Daryl, where are these guns coming from, do you know?

The Valmet looks like a 412, and at that price I would snap it up. The CZ is also a steal.

There are 63 combination guns for sale on the site, a few, less than 10 I think, are drillings, the rest are Valmet and BRNO O/U's.
I don't know where they got them from. There are 15 or more pages of "used" rifles as well on that site.
Traceexcanada moved to Ontario after Quebec re-employed the long gun registry.

And almost all are .22 HPs/5.6x52Rs. Wow. Must have been popular in Canada.

According that caliber and many VALMET combination guns I suspect that they habe been bought from Sweden. This 5,6x52R seems to be very popular there in Valmet combos.

Thanks. Interesting. I remember when tradeex was bringing in a lot of the Swedish commercial Mausers. Seems like a neat outfit.

63 combos. Wow.

Yes, and with fmj bullets for big birds like Tetrao urogallus and Lyrurus tetrix. Sometimes Anser fabalis too.

Tried to get PURDEY to build me one. Some complications with 22 HIGHPOWER AND GOVT REGULATION. They were happy to build 5.6x52r.

Beautiful little rifle. Well balanced small caliber doubles can feel way lighter than they are.

I had one of these some years back. I dont think WR made this rifle,?? most likely bought in from the trade. Mine was quite " weighty" for calibre, as often the small calibres were bulit on standard frames.
Ive been lucky enough to have owned two Mantons in 250/3000 ( consecitive numbers) on the small Webly frames...delightful in their handling and balance

Best

You’re absolutely right about the small Webley actions.

From a thread of mine years ago one can appreciate just how small the 22HP Webley is.
Now, the 22HP is no pipsqueak and many of my friends have been quite surprised when shooting this small rifle!

Top to bottom:
J&W Tolley .318WR
Johann Springer 8X57JR
Manton .22HP
