Drywall, insulation, plywood—what exactly do these materials and combinations of them do to the terminal ballistics of premium defensive bullets?

As someone who owns a handgun and is willing to take action to defend you and yours, you’ve certainly given thought to the possible consequences of firing that gun within your home. There are many premium handgun bullet designs that will give fantastic performance through all sorts of media.

But what happens in the event of a missed shot in the home?

I was intrigued to see what these premium bullets would do in a few “real-world” environments, such as an interior wall with studs or an exterior wall with drywall, fiberglass insulation and plywood exterior.

Do certain materials cause different behavior?
Will the premium bullets whistle through a door with enough apparent energy to wound, maim or kill?
What will it take to stop a handgun bullet?
What effects do caliber and bullet weight have?
While my testing was the “rudimentary/backyard” style instead of some controlled laboratory environment, it’s real … and there were some informative and eye-opening results.

Paul Harrell and others have done these tests as well. Walls are poor stoppers of projectiles.

I found it really interesting when the shot the 45 Colt compared to the others.. blew the vest off of the device...

Heavy bullets, every time.
A local chap was at the range one day when the local Mounties were testing some vests.
They were shooting at the vest with their 9mm's and he asked if he could shoot one with his Marlin. They said yes, so he planted a 405gr. Remington SP at about 1,850fps on the vest.
They all walked out to pick up the vest and remarked as how the bullet didn't go through. Don noted, "you'd not have survived that hit, though. That shot even broke the 2x4 the vest was leaning against. Imagine the internal trauma".
I saw Don at the range a couple weeks ago, it's been a while. I didn't recognize him at first. His "boy" was with him and is now close to 40yrs. old.
Don does like his .45/70's and noted he now had 7 or was it 8?

Their results do not surprise me.Test done by a several Police Depts and ATF show that a soft nose 223 round penetrates less building material than a pistol round. Might be moving fast but light weight and nose deforming quickly = lack of penetration. So safer to use in a house than a pistol, just not as maneuverable.

Young lass did a good job in Montana a few years back with 2 home invaders.
She used her 12 bore trap gun with 7 1/2 shot, I'm sure.
