So my Russian made Baikal S/S in .45/70 is an ideal US double rifle?

Hahaha I had a couple Baikal DRs. I thought of them as the AK of DRs. If the weather was shitty and insisted on hunting with a DR, then the Baikals were the spot on choice. Or perhaps like riding a scooter, fun but you dont want your buddies watching.

The Baikals were the poor mans way into the DR world. Some might argue that DRs arent supposed to be cheap precisely for that reason, to set serious DR users apart from the plastic rifle crowd--IDK. The Baikals got me moving on buying Merkels and K-guns and and and. We can laugh But I for one am sorry the Baikals (Remingtons etal) disappeared.

Lets agree that you could do worse than a Baikal 45-70 for N America

I don't disagree with the notion that the cheap Baikal double rifles are great for American hunters.

Most folks in the field are using low cost rifles, with typically great results.

With a huge selection of components, including a wide range of bullet types and weights, either the 30-06 or the 45-70 could cover most everything for a lot of US hunters.
The adjustable regulation and easy optic mounting facilitate the conversion from close shooting in the woods and in big timber mountain hunting to scoped use and high velocity loads for deer, antelope, sheep and elk in the West.

Doesn't need to be glamorous.

I bought mine second hand for a good price. As a "truck gun". But of course in Aust, it needs to go in the safe, be controlled at all times, AND unless I lived in feral pig country, most game are smaller than a .45/70 justifies.

But bought it to try out. Have only tried some factory ammo so far, which did not work well. Will play with it one day to get it working. It was bought because it was there at the time available for a price. Also as the host at NE, thought I should try one out. A way for guys without much folding paper to get into basic low grade double rifles.

My own example is a nice-enough MR-221, set up for the 350gr Woodleigh RNSN at 1950fps.
That's .450 x 3 1/4 and .500/.450 Nitro-for-Black ballistics right there, all day long!
Accuracy is on a par with most older .450 doubles too.

Crazy not to have one in the gun-safe, for the price.

BTW anyone here gotten around to laying solid ribs on one of these things? Always been my intention, just lacking motivation up to this point.
