.500 Gibbs?
      #348966 - 08/01/21 06:05 AM

I'm looking at buying a rifle that is marked .500 Gibbs. I cannot find anything that mentions 500 Gibbs. I know of the 505 Gibbs and the 500 Jeffery. Anyone know of this round?

Cannot remember where I read it, but this "may" be the .505 Gibbs necked up to use .510 bullets?
A very practical semi-wildcat since .510 bullets are somewhat more available. Handload only of course.
If dies come with it you will be golden.

Goes without saying, chamber cast and slug the bore........

No dies and the seller doesn't know much about it.

Don't some die makers offer custom dies made to a chamber cast? If the rifle is a good buy and one you really want, I wouldn't let the cost of a set of dies hold you back.

I'm not going to worry about the dies. I'd just have no idea what it is. Seller only knows that it's marked 500 Gibbs on the barrel

I do not share your enthusiasm for CH4D. They did not deliver the "Custom" dies I requested by sending them 3 fired cases - twice. They kept sending me undersized dies.

I believe Phil Shoemaker in your neck of the woods had one made up from an M2 barrel.

Rifle Magazine article by Phil Shoemaker "Details That Matter" in July 2007 issue of Rifle (p. 88),

also a Handloader article article on his "510" Gibbs ca. 2005 (sorry, magazines are at the cottage)
