Very interesting, however:
" that tops about 2,250 feet per second out of the muzzle of a 24-inch rifled barrel, and is still zipping at 2,000 fps at 100 yards."
is kinda hard to swallow.

The claim is it loses only 250fps in the first 100yards travel?

Maybe it does?

Tests were done firing downhill off of a very steep mountain side..

Considering very low BC, and very light projectile for a full sized (.620") 'bullet' - the loss of only 250fps seems a stretch.

According to Speer, a BC of .160 and if started at 2,300fps MV., is running 1,807fps at 100 yards.
That's a loss of 493fps.

The .58 cal. Lyman #575494 bullet is 315gr. and has a BC of .067. Started at the highest vel. Lyman shows, of 1,300fps,
that one loses 416fps in the first 100yards.

An even lighter bullet of larger calibre, started even faster will have an even lower BC & more drop.
Speer's data shows for a BC of .120(their lowest), a loss of 640fps in the first 100yards travel from a 2,300fps initial vel.

So, I am calling BS on his projected loss of 250fps for a 275gr. .20 bore bullet started at 2,250fps.

Good article, though.

Guys,
I agree. Just looking at the energy with a 280 gr bullet, it looks to me that the 100 yd velocity is ~ 1700 fps (if my math is correct).
Still, a 280 gr slug at 1700 fps is fairly potent, similar to a 454 Casull at the muzzle.

Yeah. I was wondering about the bc myself.
I did work out the sectional density and if I got it right it's .09

That concerns me regardless of velocity.

The Sectional Density is very low, thus penetration would be quite poor as well.
1,700fps and 280gr. works out to 1,797.26fpe which sounds decent, from an energy standpoint, however, I think the 100yard vel would be closer to 1,400fpe. Still not bad, but that is a large diameter-for-it's-weight, projectile.

With that low an SD, my guess is that the lungs are the only safe bet at almost any range. Finally got a range test this year for the Remington Barnes sabot. I like full bore stuff but there is certainly no free lunch.

I think if I was restricted to shooting sabots, the Barnes would likely be the one I'd choose.
Luckily, my rifled 835 Mosberg really likes the Canadian Made Qualandi 492gr.(1 1/8oz.) slug at 1,610fps.
It does well with some other slugs, like the 3" foster(1oz.) in WW brand at 1,750fps. Those kick a bit.
Both of these will make a 1 1/2" hole for 5 shots at 30yards, elbow rest.
I like full sized slugs, Tom, although I have not shot anything with one, yet.
Why shoot a 12 bore if it isn't shooting a 12 bore slug?
I've got .50 cal. rifle(s) & no shotgun-only area to hunt.

I've had conversations with a few of the slug makers, including the schrifle. Once again, no free lunch. You can only do so much with that low a pressure.
I shoot mainly 20ga, and best slug I have found to date is the Lightfield 3". It stays supersonic up to 100 yds and performs well although if it hits bone it self destructs. Great accuracy though.
The shop ordered in a few cases of the Remingtons and my total experience is 2 deer. One quartering shot was interesting and found bone from the near side on the far side after field dressing. Very accurate at 100yds but haven't tested them further at this point.
Remington must have consistent sabots because accuracy rests on that.
One of the makers told me that differential cooling/heating in the injection molds is the main issue.
I may go old school and try paper patching some shotgun slugs this year. I would rather have accuracy and mass over a flat trajectory.
Maybe I'll come to my senses and just switch to muzzleloader full time.

I suggest a 20, 16 or 14 bore. All of these carry quite enough lead to do the job.
Even a 24 bore, at .58 would work splendidly. At the shot, it should be hooves in the air. That's what I like to see.
