I have a winchester 94 in 356 Win which is (was) Winchester's attempt to get near 358 ballistics from a 94 with its tubular magazine and not so strong action. Winchester did the same with their 307 Win re the 308.

They used to load a 250 gr load for this round and I've still got some. The 356 is about 100 or 150fps slower than the 358. Reloading manuals show greater differences between the rounds with hevier bullets, less with lighter bullets. The round uses a flat nosed bullet. Winchester now only loads the 200gr bullet.

I've shot a couple of deer I'd guess weighed 120-140lbs live weight with the 250 grain load and it is very effective. On neck and shoulder shots there is some evidence of the bullet beginning to expand but not much. No bullet recoveries. The deer shot in either the neck or shoulder dropped in their tracks. Relatively little meat loss. I don't recall shooting one through the lungs but would guess the 250gr bullet would sail through a 130lb deer leaving calibre entry and near calibre exit.

My rifle weighs 7lbs on the nose empty with apeture sight. Recoil with the 250 grain load is signifigant. I would think the 358 model 99 would be a great rifle for deer through elk and moose size game at close to med distances.

Checking the Nosler, Speer, Hornaday and Barnes manuals shows no bullet heavier than 250 grains. Vel runs from 2750 for 180gr to 2300-2400 for the 250. Winchester loads only the 200 gr at 2490 and with a 150yd zero this load is shown as 1.5" high at 100yds and 3.6" low at 200. (Intestingly Winchester loads the 356 with a 200gr bullet at 2460, which isn't nearly the difference in muzzle velocity that the manuals show)

Hope this helps,

JPK

WARNING!!! It is dangerous to own a Savage 99 in 358...because I don't have one and want one... I think you now own the ultimate lever action rifle. It is hard to type while turning green.............

A friend of mine gave my son a Browning BLR in 358. Winchester still loads this round but sporadically. They only make the 200 grain slivertip at this time. They are a real pain in the ass to find. We haven't fired it yet but we have a boar hunt scheduled for the fall. This will give us a chance to see what it can do. Many years ago when my friend first bought it I saw him drop a black bear flat with one shot. I believe it has excellent ballistics for medium game at woods distances.

RLI,

I'd have to agree w/Luv2 ........great rifle and a caliber that will fool you. It's easily capable of doing much more than a "woods caliber.' If you want some interesting reading go to www.kifaru.net and check out the rambling rifle articles on the site. Patrick Smith(Kifaru) has done some great things with the .358Win......it's a very versatile round. Legendary Alaskan brown bear guide, the late Hal Waugh, used a 358Win along w/his favorite .375Wea.........."woods rifle caliber" is a misnomer that has plagued this very efficient thumper for years............you're gonna love that rifle.

In reply to:

WIth the going rates of 99s it that caliber around here you got quite the bargain! Does yours have therotary magazine or clip? Is it teh thumb safety or is the safety on the lever? no matter which you have.......it is an outstanding gun in one of it's absoluet best calibers. Congrats

I own (3) savage 99s. (2) are 99-EGs in 300 savage caliber and (1) is a 99F in 308. Only my9 9F is scoped. They are very accurate and a joy to carry afield. I have a yearning to own a 358 and a 250-3000. But both of those calibers are highly sought after & tend to be $$$$$$. . Congrats again on your find

Thanks everone for your replies.

Yes it is a tang/thumb safety with rotary magazine and counter it is near mint. The reason previous owner wanted to sell was ammo hard to get here in Australia and he wanted to get a Ruger lever in .44Mag???????? I praised the Ruger and I got the Savage!!!! I now have a Savage 99 in .358Win. and one in .308Win now a .300Savage would be nice.............
